Disaster Easter Camping trip - need a new tent :(

Well we went camping Easter weekend and ended up with 3 broken poles in the wind! Not very happy and have lost confidence in the tent.
We were using the Vango weekender/Icarus and the wind got up in the night and was hitting directly on the back causing the back arch to practically touch the floor! Eventually the poles gave way and we ended up de-camping into a cottage for the rest of the week.

I was happy with the Icarus up until this weekend and don't know whether just to repair and hope it doesn't happen again, but feel I maybe a nervous wreck as soon as we get any wind.

So think I might look at other tents, although DH thinks I'm being stupid.
So looking for suggestions must be

  • Easy to put up
  • Suitable for a family of 4 and a dog
  • Would like a sealing canopy on the front, but not essential as we have a Vango extension.
  • decent size living area, prefer bit bigger than the Icarus
-SIG
  • Stable in wind!

Any ideas?
Ta

We've just bought an Outwell montana 6 after me doing loads of internet research - I remember some of the reviews saying they were the only tent standing after a windy weekend! Very sturdy (altho heavy to carry) i can't wait to give ours a first outing! You were brave going camping at Easter tho, I'm waiting until the end of April!

Oh and it has a kids room you can buy seperately which is ACE!

We've got a fab bell tent from belltentuk which has only one central pole and is very sturdy. "Heavyweight" canvas but it's not heavy at all. We have the inner for it, giving a nice roomy porch. Plenty of room for 4 and a dog, but not if you want separate sleeping compartments!
We used a separate tarp to make the living area, but you can get an extension.

I'd either go for a tunnel tent with steel poles (like the montana or any of the outwell polycottons which always stand up well in the wind)

or a canvas frame tent (ebay) they are the brick shit houses of the tent world and never budge - doddle to put up, they don't have a sig though

or a canvas bell tent or canvas pyramide, super doddle to put up, 4 season (ie designed to stand up to gales), sig, you might have to compromise a bit on the living space though.

oh and some delta pegs

Thanks everyone, It wasn't that windy, I would say breezy but nowhere near as windy as other times we have camped, but on those occassions used our Diablo. (sold that now)
I have looked at Outwell tents and do like them, not keen on bell tents. I am drawn to tunnel tents and the metal poles are looking like a good idea.
I have been looking at the Vango Maritsa and think I maybe in love, just have to convince DH.
I have Delta pegs

I never leave home without them

Yes would also recommend a tunnel with steel poles.

we are just about to sell our Montana 6 - where are you based? we are in Brighton area

flame17 · 12/04/2010 23:28

Thanks Dusty but I'm in Leeds and think I'm going to go for the Maritsa 500
