Hi, am planning a camping trip for a small group of 3/4 families with kids from 18mths to 8 for the first week of school holidays and this looks ideal (has fires) but am worried it will get too busy and crowded.....last year went to a 'small' quiet site and it was absolutely rammed with hardly any room for the kids to play .. this looks nice and big but any info on what its actually like would be great.....tia

I haven't been, but bumping for you as I'd like to hear of experiences too. We've booked a weekend there later in the year. I've seen it recommended here, so I'm sure you'll get some info soon.

I didn't go back there last year but went the year before and it was very busy and the facilities were too limited for the number of campers - huge queues for the loos and washing up. Nice site but too popular for me.

Oh no, pollycazalet.

I've been - there was lots of space between pitches, and you could have a fire, which was great, but agree with Polly, the facilities are practically non existent.

Went in June last year. Weekdays were great but Friday night it was rammed. Lots of large groups who let the kids run riot until gone 11 at night. Then the group of dads next to us let their kids run around screaming and climbing trees at 6am while they slept off their hangovers.

We may have been unlucky. The people running it and ethos is fantastic but the weekender's were something else. They didn't fit into the chilled out, eco vibe at all.
I may get flamed for this but basically they had the same mentality & selfishness as the lager swilling dicks that you get at some haven / park holiday sites. The only difference was that they wore Boden, had bell tents and kids called Jeremy and Arabella.

thanks for that what i was a bit afraid of! , a shame as like the idea of it, may try for an early weekend trip instead then.... the search for a site continues.........

I went there 2 years ago and soo wanted to like the place - lots of good reviews, looked like just my sort of site but alas I experienced all of the above. I also noticed they had way more campers than they were liscenced for and many pitched too close or blocking routes in and out of fields which as folk were being told they could light their fires anywhere gave me real worries about what would happen in the event of a fire [shock[ In fact a young boy fell onto a fire whilst I was there and I helped his mum douse and treat his burnt arm as there were no first aid points - problem was the cold water supply was really low pressure too making it a slow process

Suffice to say I have not gone back again

We did Wowo last year, it was fine, not too busy really but:

  • it was just to self consciously boho for me with bunting being attached to tents etc..., my DS1 was playing on his DS outside the tent and I got really evil looks from other people.
  • the facilities were limited
  • the sunday spanish breakfast was pretty grim

loved the fire pits but the firewood was £5 a bundle which was enough for one fire

I was pondering it for DH, DS's and I's first camp together (I used to camp eons ago, but DH and DS have never slept in a tent. I want to convert them so am trying to find somewhere that they'll really enjoy - that first camping experience can be formative!)

Then I read these reviews Here

... and was totally put off. If I want to be surrounded by boho soap-dodgers playing bongoes I can walk down the road to Camden Market for free.

I'm hunting for a campsite not too far away (under three hours driving) which allows a bit of space between pitches, has recycling facilities for our rubbish, and absolutely NO "entertainment" whatsoever. (And that includes people sitting around campfires singing. Oh the horror...) Somewhere that DS can run around safely. Clean toilets would be an exciting extra, but I'm a realist... The hunt continues.

becstarlitsea, are you looking for weekends on during the week? Our first camp was at Blackberry Wood, and it was perfect. Secluded pitches in the woods, so private and very cosy. It is however fully booked for summer weekends.

becstarlitsea · 31/03/2010 18:03

Thank you, that's very kind of you MisSalLaneous!

We'll go mid-week but at short notice... DH is freelance, so I'm putting together a shortlist and when the weather improves, if he doesn't get a call to come in and work on a Monday, then I"ll call around the campsites on my shortlist (which will include Blackberry Wood now! But not Wowo...) and see where we can get a pitch. Then fling everything into the car and off we'll go. It's one of the benefits of freelance work to be able to escape mid-week- the downside being that it's impossible to plan anything in advance/book.

Can't wait to get away, London is getting to me today. And this weather - brrrr! Bought some bargain thermal underwear online intending it for camping and am considering wearing it around the flat!
