VW campervans for family of five ...

Anyone know anything about hammocks for vw campervans? I have been looking into getting one, I know some seat five but normally they only sleep four so we'd need an awning. But I have seen a few ads saying you can sleep 'four plus child in hammock'. Anyone had/ got one of these?

Also, can you fit three-point seat belts on the older vw vans? Any experiences very welcome!

I mean I've been looking into getting a campervan not a hammock ...

If you've got a pop up top then two hammocks go in this and the third hammock goes over the front two seats but I think these are just for younger children - have a look on JustKampers. We've fitted a three-point harness to our '69 van and are thinking about fixing one of the buddy seats to the floor so that a second three-pointer can go in the back. Other than that it needs to be lap belts - hth

Are you wanting a VW Bay or a T25? Just wondering as you'd have more living/storage space for 5 of you in a T25 especially if you get a high top. If you want a Bay then look for a Viking conversion, they're 6 berth I believe. Massive pop-up roof that sleeps4 upstairs.

A friend of mine has a ab hammock in their T25 and its fine for a kid under the age of about 12 I'd say. I looked at getting one but ended up converting the "upstairs" to a 2 berth sleeping area instead.

Yes, you can fit 3-pint seat belts but you may need to hunt around for a garage willing/able to do it. IME they suck through their teeth and shake their heads when you ask them.

thanks - we were looking at a t2 - the one we went to see had a huge bed in the roof and one in the back, and we were looking at hammocks that go in the cab for the littlest one (who hasn't arrived yet). Although having looked at the size of the beds it might not be necessary

how did you convert by the way, stripey? DIY or at a garage?

We fit in our LT35 but it is pretty big and ugly. People round here hate it. We never park outside someone's house but we still regularly have it reprted as an abandoned vehicle, even though tax disc is clearly displayed.

I would love a nice old VW but I think until we can fit in better we might have to wait. Dh often sleeps in the drive away awning with ds1 atm and me and dd and ds2 get the beds!

It was semi-converted when I got it. Its a high top t25/t3 but the upstairs bed was only 4ft long. There was no extender wooden board thingy that lots of them have and everyone who saw my van said I wouldn't be able to have an extender as there was nowhere to rest it due to upper cupboards.

I took it to a place called Timber Technicians near Nottingham, they specialise in camper van interior conversions and they came up with a fantastic solution for a bargin price.
