Hello, just saw this today hope its not too late

We went on a road trip in our campervan through Denmark in 2007. Right across the islands to Copenhagen.

It is absolutely brilliant for camping - gorgeous sites, most you can just turn up at as well although busy on weekends, particularly on the coast.

Prices at the time were comparable with good UK sites - £15-20 per night, and you need a European Camping Card thing which most sites will sell you on your first night in Denmark.

We'd love to do another trip just up the West coast of the mainland part, it is supposed to be beautiful.

Can you tell, I would totally recommend it, I can dig out the names of the places we went if you like.

Hi Brightwell,

Ok, as far as I can remember here goes... I may have to disappear for a bit for bottle giving duties but will be back!

Most of the sites were the town's municipal campsites which are nowhere near as grim as they sound - apparently there are v strict rules on running campsites in DK, eg. they have to provide cooking facilites for campers as well as washing up and hot showers.

First stop was Sonderborg (not sure how to do the funny slash through the 'o'), far SE of Jutland (mainland). It is a v popular sailing town, lots of watersports activities and pretty harbour. We left there on a FRiday and I remember th campsite being v full.

Then we went across to the island of Funen. We stayed in the campsite on the outskirts of Odense, which was quite a way out but on a bus route into town Odense was lovely (think its where the Hans Christian Andersen Museum was which was good).

I think we then stayed in the campsite in Ringe (this might have been on the way back), which was a municipal campsite in the grounds of the local leisure centre. Included free use of the pool which was nice as it was a pure stop over.

We then went over the mega-bridge (toll about £25) to Zealand which is where Copenhagen is. I can't really remember where we stayed here apart from Copenhagen itself (too much Carlsberg) The campsite was in the suburbs and was great as it was on a trainline into the centre. Highlights in Copenhagen were the Carlsberg brewery and museum and the harbour tour to see the little mermaid.

On the way back we visited Ribe on the W side of Jutland, which is a v old and v beautiful town.

We didn't do legoland as we didn't have kids then and it was the Danish school holidays, we also really enjoyed some of our stop-offs in Northern Germany on the way there so decided to spend a bit more of our 3 weeks there on the way back (also stopped in Bruge on the way back where there is a lovely little site - Camping Memling 25 mins walk from the city centre).

As I said, we didn't book any of the sites as we were pretty flexible.

Got to dash but will ask DH if he remembers any further sites/info and may be back later. HTH

Thanks for that, I want to go to Sonderborg, Copenhagen & Billund.

We think the Sonderborg campsite was called 'Sonderborg camping'

The Copenhagen site was called 'camping absalon' but we did try to get into another site there called 'Charlottenlund' which was full.

DH reminded me that one of the places we loved was the remains of a viking settlement on Zealand that we went to. Have looked in the lonely planet and it is called 'Trelleborg'. We happened to go there when there was a viking re-enactment festival about to start and it was amazing (but DH is an archaeologist and did his dissertation on viking settlements so it had geek appeal for him anyway )

I've been browsing through messages to get into the mood for camping and found this one. Sorry for digging up an oldish thread but the rose tinted travel sunglasses have got me misty eyed!

We've camped in Denmark a few times, with and without kids. I would agree with previous poster about the facilities at camp sites being excellent, we often find them better than most UK sites.

I would really recommend Charlottenlund in Copenhagen but you will need to book, the earlier the better, look at doing it now. We booked definate nights there for the first part of a trip and then made the rest up. It is a great site- small but busy, very cosmopolitan with different nationalities, next to a beach and 20 mins bus ride to the centre.

When are you hoping to travel? If it's August then the Danish school holidays are finishing so campsites are less full but still good weather and facilities.

We also liked Trelleborg and Ribe. The Viking ship museum at Roskilde was fantastic, and we liked the castle at Helsingor (good cycle or train ride up to here from Copenhagen), Egeskov slot on Funen, a trip to Aero, especially to Aeroskobing (this has great camping but can be expensive to get to, but a day trip is well worth it, think there is a ferry from Sonderborg, but we went from Svenborg and Faaborg), the outdoor musuem in Arhus, the Church and graveyard in Jelling and also the 'tollund man' in Silkeborg.

I didn't like camping at Billund- it's a big site and right next to the airport so very noisy but it is convenient for legoland. The last time we went, we went instead to a site a bit further away in the 'Danish Lake District' and made legoland a day trip from there (as well as using it as a base for Arhus and Jelling). If you do go to legoland, it's often possible to buy tickets from campsites, this will save you a lot of queuing.

My fav camping sites were Charlottenlund, Mons Klint, Aeroskobing and Faaborg.

I would go every year if I could.

Just marking my place... as Denmark def a possibility.

poppyboo · 24/05/2010 09:49

wow, this sounds so amazing! I think I would love to go here with my two girls!

KeegansHair · 09/08/2010 17:08

And just to resurrect this thread once more, we're thinking of doing a week's holiday in Denmark at the start of next month and want to drive.

Can anyone tell me what Harwich-Ebsjerg ferry is like, with a 3-year-old?

It sounds like it could be a case of that way madness lies but I could be wrong?

Also, does anyone know what the weather's like in September?

Thanks
