Any single parent campers around? I have questions....

It's just me and DS now and I am trying to take a positive can do approach to all aspects of our lives.

I am trying to secure funding for driving lessons for example.

We camped a lot as a family before but with a big beast of a tent which ex has said he will give me the money for if not I am going to ebay it.

So any single parent campers on here??
What tents do you have? Do you manage to put them up ok? How much stuff do you take? Does it bother you being 'on your own' i.e. no other adult in the tent? I would consider going with another mum and dcs but all either coupled up or anti-camping.

If I can pass my test and get a car I can take DS camping. Come along and tell me if I am taking the can do approach too far or if it is possible.

blue tents are good

SuperBunny · 01/02/2010 20:12

I'm a single parent camper. We currrently use a little 3 person dome type tent. Just a cheapy but would replace with similar because it is all I can manage to erect whilst trying to supervise a 4 yr old.

I am eager to start camping again. When do you all start going? We used to camp at Easter when I was little and I have lots of memories of waking up to find the tent covered in snow!

SuperBunny · 01/02/2010 20:12

And I agree, blue tents are good!

I am off to look at tent porn

Batteryhuman · 01/02/2010 20:15

me too OMDB, roll on easter. Currently looking at sites for the summer. I have tents for all eventualities but it doesn't stop me drooling at all the lovely new ones. Though I hate the great, big, space-to-park-your-car-inside ones!!

aSilverLining · 01/02/2010 20:22

You have all got me excited about camping again now!

Those of you who have 3man tents, how big and heavy are they when packed? I am trying to think of being in a car OR being on public transport at the moment as don't know if or when I will pass test.

Camping season for us is usually easter to halloween but I am considering at least bringing it to a close september this year as last halloween we got caught in a storm. {shudder} Isn't Easter early this year??

I think Good Friday is 2nd April this yr or thereabouts. My 3 person tent packs up into a small holdall type bag. I could manage that on a train but not with a cooker and clothes etc. We need a car for camping.

Where do you all camp?

Batteryhuman · 01/02/2010 20:26

Last easter was kind of frosty in the morning in the New Forest if I remember right but the sunday morning was sunny. Beginning to wonder if it is ever going to get warm again.....

SuperBunny · 01/02/2010 20:28

Porn alert

I want this tent

SuperBunny · 01/02/2010 20:29

Battery - can you recommend a New Forest site? I live v close and would love to camp there with DS

aSilverLining · 01/02/2010 20:34

OMDB - that journey planner website, do you choose a campsite first then, and then see if you can access it via public transport on the journey planner website??

Roundhill near Brockenhurst is a really nice site, loads of ponies and donkeys and deer and loads of running around space.

SuperBunny · 01/02/2010 20:39

Thanks Battery. Will look it up. Only love about 30 mins from there but might be fun for a weekend

overmydeadbody · 01/02/2010 20:41

yep silver, I have a destination in mind, say a campsite in Wells-Next-the-Sea, and then I will go to the website and see how I can get from Cambridge to Wells via public transport. It will then give me a few suggested routes using a combination of busses, trains and walking. I hope that makes sense!

SuperBunny · 01/02/2010 20:44

Oh, I love camping in North Norfolk

QueenofWhatever · 03/02/2010 15:49

Hello Silver . I also am thinking of camping trips for DD and I. I have two tents, a 2.5 berth one that saw me round most of the South Pacific (bragging) and a huge monster one off e-bay with two bedrooms, living room and porch (£70 but super heavy).

I have a staged plan:

  • see if I can finally get my driving licence back from DVLA
  • practice putting up big tent in back garden with DD's 'help'
  • weekend away for 1-2 nights at campsite about an hour away
  • sublet my friend's caravan in Cornwall for ten days in July
  • and, of course, join in the Mumsnet festival trip, I'm tempted by Camp Bestival

That's this year and then I think I'll buld from there. You're all much more hearty than me and if I could I would rent a mobile home with kids' club in Italy but can't afford it. I'm building up for DD being a teenager and taking her backpacking around India.

aSilverLining · 03/02/2010 21:15

Hello queenof!

Wow backpacking around India sounds amazing! Nothing and no one to stop us now, we really can do anything, and go anywhere we want.

I am often telling DS that there are so many exciting places in the world, and he is beginning to realise what a big place it is. Last night as he was going to sleep he said to me, 'mummy, tomorrow can we see even more of the big exciting world?'. {heart melting}

Anyone else considering this I asked on ukcampsites which campsites in a certain area where accessible by public transport and now have 4 lovely campsites to pick from (the website also has details and reviews of each site).

Feeling quite positive that I can do this on public transport, and DS will love it as he enjoys buses and trains as much as camping!

OMDB what do you sleep on? It is looking more like public transport this year so no airbeds. Do you not bother with mats either then? Are you not uncomfortable??
