is it worth camping for just one night?

went camping last summer and loved every bit of it.

wanna take ds camping in the half term in Feb but was thinking maybe just for one night somewhere not too close to home so that it does actually feel like a holiday but just not too far away so that it only takes a couple ofhours to get there.

is it still worth it for 1 night do you think? just thought feb might be a bit cold for more than 1 night plus we only have a little tent so if its raining we cant do much although could prob come up with enough entertainment for 1 night.

we would have the day to do things before we got to the camp site and then the next day before we left for home.

if your tent is easy to pitch and you're travelling light - I'd say yes it's worth it.

bouncingblueberries · 21/01/2010 20:22

Totally worth it!

raspberrytart · 21/01/2010 20:23

Golly - your'e brave camping in Feb
But back to question - Yes, I think
How old ds?

MrsMalcolmTucker · 21/01/2010 20:27

Yes - the key is to pack light. If you're out and about doing things, you don't really need to take that much with you, especially if you can mostly eat out. You also don't need a full change of clothes, wash things etc if you're going to be back home in time for a bath before bed on the second day.

We've often camped for just the Saturday night before the dc came along and we used to work late on weekdays so couldn't always get away on the Friday. Always worth getting out, even if it's just overnight.

cool! ds is 5. he was so brilliant last summer when we went (he was 4 then) and he loved it. He wont care that its cold.

was thinking we will be ok if we take thick pj, blankets, sleeping bag each and a suacepan and my gas cooker to boil water for out water bottles!

and plenty of games in case we are stuck in out tent for the evening with bad weather.

may even take a potty so we dont have to venture out to the toilets in the nnight in the rain! although il think a bit harder about that one!

Im thinking maybe somethere near Portsmouth for our trip

I don't want to be negative .... but it'll be freezing and nothing like camping in the summer. What about a B&B for the night somewhere?

MrsMalcolmTucker · 21/01/2010 21:02

I always take a bucket for night time wees! It's my old lidded one for nappies - invaluable.

Agree it will be cold, but ok if you have good sleeping bags, hot water bottles etc. You will probably end up going to bed early cos it'll be too nippy to stay out of the sleeping bags though, so I'd do something exhausting during the day.

juicychops · 21/01/2010 21:05

i would consider staying in a b&b but i just really want a cheap cheap budget night away and camping will be just that

I would not camp in Feb with a 5 yo.

Apart fom anything else, the fun and relaxation of camping is sitting out in the evening...it will get dark so early, be far too cold to sit around. Do you have proper 4 season sleeping bags?

I used to go camping in the winter, when I was a student and went climbing - I wouldn't do it now with a child.

Have a look at the Travelodge website - loads of cheap deals for Feb half term!

milkybarsrus · 21/01/2010 21:31

What about camping at a youth hostel? that way you get to camp in the great (freezing in feb) outdoors, but can use all the facilities of the hostel! and with a young child it would be very exciting going to bed in a tent, but you can get changed for bed in the hostel etc

LauraIngallsWilder · 21/01/2010 21:40

Our house is cold most of the time. We have a temperature thingy that usually says the indoor temperature is 13 degrees atm - sometimes as low as 4!
At night I have huge quantities of duvet, blanket, hotwater bottle and pyjamas, socks and sometimes gloves.......

Outside in February will be too cold surely! I wouldnt even consider it

JennyPennyNAPPYWEB · 23/01/2010 01:37

I think it will be far too cold, possibly below freezing. Remember all that snow we had last feb? I don't mind it being a bit chilly at night but there is no way I would even consider going in feb. We were worrying about cold at night in May! lol. I don't think you should let a 5year old stay out all night in those temperatures IMO.

If you do go, why not wait till the last min, and see what the weather is doing? will probably be even cheaper if its just a few days before you go. And places won't get fully booked in feb.

Or camp in the garden for a trial night? Then you could always come in if its too cold?

MollieO · 23/01/2010 01:43

Will there be any campsites open in Feb? A few do AYR but not many.
