that accept touring caravans and are great for active families with preschool children?

I have found a few but it is nice to have some recommendations- I would like nice swimming pool/s, not too far from beach and maybe a nice bakery!!

We are thinking of going in late June/early July before the English school hols (we are scottish so can avoid the peak times).

DC's will be 5, nearly 4 and 2.

Polmanter campsite iin St Ives is really good- swimming pool, bar and restaurant on site- the pitches are huge!! And lots to do in the area. Also, when I was there last June thwy had a free bus into St Ives centre which runs all day.

Also, if you wanted to go to France, Brittany Ferries run an overnight crossing to St Malo which is around 8/10hours (longer than the usual 5/6) so you get more sleep.

northender · 16/01/2010 17:55

Wooda farm near Bude is fab, don't know about touring vans though. We camped there on an MN recommendation.

thatsnotmymonster · 16/01/2010 18:02

Thank you!

I've looked at polmanter and it looks lovely so I've added it to my favourites shortlist!

Is the St Malo crossing a lot more expensive?
We did Hull-Rotterdam about 3 years ago as we were going to Morzine, it was great but cost about £500. I also looked at the one to SSantander or Bilbao and that was £1200- no way could we afford that!!

Trevedra farm near Sennen in West Cornwall.

thatsnotmymonster · 16/01/2010 18:56

just been looking at some of the french campsites- it would really be cheaper for us to stay in a tent onsite and get the inclusive ferry crossing than to tow our own caravan...wouldn't it?

We've been looking at Les Mouettes in Carantec, Northern Britanny, it looks great for our DC (will be 6 and 4), some reviews on this site.

thatsnotmymonster · 16/01/2010 20:12

Oh will have a look at that one too, Lizzy! Have you checked out Ty Nadan? It looks fab too for everyone- I think I would book through EuroCamp...who is generally the best operater to go with?

Lizzylou · 17/01/2010 11:42

WE've been looking at Keycamp, seems cheaper and have better reviews than Eurocamp, also Canvas holidays looked good too.

DH pretty much has his heart set on Les Mouettes, I can't believe I have been talked into a tent! But it is so much cheaper and we can then stay for longer. Will have have a look at Ty Nadan.

Bon Vacances!!!

Or summat

we love brittany - like cornwall with better weather and less people/crap

used keycamp, eurocamp, canvas. overall not much between them - some are better at some sites than others. chateau des ormes, l'atlantique, le ranolien, les deux fontaines, la grande metairie are all ones we have visited and all have pros and cons - though we've been happy overall except for weather in a few.

happy to answer any questions on them if you are interested. some we have been back to several times

i am getting excited about hols reading these threads

Lizzylou · 17/01/2010 13:10

dreamingofsun, which site would you say would be good for two boys aged 6 and 4, we like to get on the beach, be outside (weather permitting) and DS1 is very active. We will be staying in a Keycamp tent (judging by the prices!).

Have now been loking at some Southern Britanny sites, liked the look of l'atlantique and La Grande Metairie, am thinking Ty Nadan will be cold at night (as it is in a valley, have been reading some reviews), though it does look fab.

My head is in a spin, DH has taken DS1 to football and left his credit card, but I think I will need to speak with him!

dreamingofsun · 17/01/2010 13:26

lizzy - off to football shortly myself with 2 of mine - so may take a while to respond to any further questions. i've 3 active boys. weather in southern brittany is better than northern - so good idea. atlantique - when we went the weather was awful, so didn't see it at its best. you can walk through a wood to a long sandy beach. pool area was good and they had a massive slide. i think it was the weather that put us off returning to this one - i can't remember anything unpleasant about it. grande metairie we have been to 3 times. there are some poorer areas of the site where they pack you in and by the bar would be quite noisy i think. but we have always been lucky. some of the eurocamp tents used to be at the back of the site near a stream and i think this would be a good area to request - far away from the bar. it has had mixed reviews on websites due to noise at night - but we never had problems - when are you going? we used to go may half term and week after cause cheaper and less busy. there is one of the most fantastic beaches in carnac and the area overall is beautiful. at in may/june we used to have beaches almost to ourselves. have to go now - happy to answer other questions later when back from football. canvas didn't have football club last year and we had to pay extra - added to cost of hol quite a bit

dreamingofsun · 17/01/2010 16:17

lizzy when are you planning to go? have thought a bit more and this would play a part in where i chose. canrnac is our favourite area - been there 3 times and once in gite. lovely beaches, good places to pic-nic, towns of auray and vannes good to visit, and gulf de morbihan picturess - lots of tiny inlets. but i think the campsite might be a little busy in summer hols - though would depend on pitch. if you take a detailed map you can find beaches off the beaten track - i remember finding one where there were about 5 cars in the car park and we picnicked in a field of orchids.

Lizzylou · 17/01/2010 16:41

I think we are going for L'Atlantique, with Keycamp (so in tent already pitched) in mid-July.

Tell me it will be OK???

dreamingofsun · 17/01/2010 17:01

good choice of holiday if you have lively boys. we had very bad weather there - my over-riding memory is mud and rain. sure it will be better for you. remember the local beach as being nice. its reviewed on the ukcampsites.co.uk website - fouesnant is the town

Lizzylou · 17/01/2010 17:11

My mind has been going bonkers with it all, we were all set for Carantec, Les Mouettes, but I think we may be better going a bit farther south.
What time of the year did you go? I hope mid-JUly will be OK!

dreamingofsun · 17/01/2010 19:09

when the boys were younger we went either may or june; recently we have gone in school hols. are you worried it might be cold? it should be fine in july - its warmer than southern england but it shouldn't be too hot.

if possible i wouldn't arrive on a sat. we had horrific traffic last year - but was to vendee and more french people go there. brittany is lovely and very good for chiildren of your age - we have lots of happy memories.

Lizzylou · 17/01/2010 19:46

We are thinking of arriving on a Monday and staying for 9/10 days, we are in Lancashire so will break the journey up on the way there (Plymouth to Roscoff) by staying at my Mom's in the Midlands over night on the Sunday.

We were all set for Les Mouettes right on the Northern Brittany coast, but reading the reviews it seems it is very windy, and we are in dire need of some sun!

Where are you going this year?

I think we are booking L'Atlantique in the next few days. Then I will have 6 months to get my head round camping and to lose weight and tone up!

thatsnotmymonster · 17/01/2010 20:51

Lol- I now have no idea where to go.

I did the same as you, Lizzy, and read the reviews of Ty Nadan and now will definitely not be going there- all seems to be fab if you have much older children but with littlees it will be too cold and not enough to do.

Problem for us is that driving from Scotland means that it is a LOT of driving. The dc's are brilliant in the car but DH hates it. Plus may mean more expense in overnight stays etc.

It's mind boggling.

OP posts:
Lizzylou · 17/01/2010 21:13

thatsnotmymonster , DH isn't mad keen on driving, but L'Atlantique is only 1 1/2hr from Roscoff, or maybe 2hrs. I thought it was hard work coming down from Lancashire, but Scotland!
It will cost c£1000 for 10 days in mid-July for 4 of us in a Supertent with Keycamp, including crossing. Which is bloody good, I think.
Actually tried to book tonight but the site kept crashing!

dreamingofsun · 18/01/2010 09:04

if you are worried about rain, you can get quite detailed information by googling large towns. i think we were just very unlucky with the weather when we went to l'atlantique. though i have a feeling that the weather on that peninsular bit is more similar to nothern brittany than south. what about les deux fontaines? its slightly further south and you can walk through the fields to a nice beach. i can't remember where the tents were, but i think it would be good for younger children.

ceppy · 20/01/2010 18:33

Can anyone recommend a campsite in Devon and one in Cornwall. Going end of June/begin July for kids 11,10 and 7. Bringing tent. Preferably near beach and a nice village/town. No largerlouts please but where there may be some kids around to play.

ceppy · 21/01/2010 10:54

Ayone suggestions? Please!
