WIll it be too cold to camp in May?

Thinking about booking a week camping with a 1 year old and 2 year old for May this year.

DO you think it will be warm enough? Went in June last year and if anything it was too hot so think it should be OK?

We would be going to Dorset?

We're going to Dorset at Easter for only our second camping trip, and I'm really worried about being cold! So we've bought 2 heaters, extra blankets, so we'll see how cold it really is!

Furball · 15/01/2010 15:48

I would get electric hook up and a thermostatic fan heater and use that through the night to stop it getting really chilly.

We went to Cornwall in May last year with a 7mo and we were plenty warm enough (without heaters or extra blankets).

We have camped in the last week of May a couple of times it isn't too cold but you also need to consider the light. It gets dark and cooler earlier so you are stuck in the tent longer than you would be in the summer.

JennyPennyNAPPYWEB · 15/01/2010 16:01

Thanks, not too worried about the dark as we will be going to Haven anyway so lots of indoor activities to do and a good size tent. Think we will go for it then!

Out of interest, what equipment do we need to go electric? Wasn't going to get it but we now might be booking an electric pitch as the basic one won't fit our tent?

Could be, though we went in May last year during the heat wave and it was so hot we had to come home!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/01/2010 16:44

we were camping with snow on the ground last Easter. -2C. no electric hookup but very good sleeping bags with liners and hotwater bottles and hats.

mind you getting ready for bed was a bit breath taking.

dreamingofsun · 15/01/2010 17:17

it varies. some years its ok others its really cold - the ground doesn't seem to have warmed up and even during the evenings it can get cold. suggest lots of bedding and then more and i also remember wearing a puffa coat and woolly hat

dreamingofsun · 15/01/2010 17:17

oh forget to say, dorset is fab- though i'm biased as i live here!

Lucycat · 17/01/2010 15:45

Nah it'll be fine - wrap up warm - we always start at Whit although we did camp in Northumberland at Oct this year and a few years we spent a scorching easter up in SW Scotland!

But as dreamingofsun said it's the ground that seems to be cold at the start of the season so insulate from below.

tbh if you can't camp in this country at Whit it doesn't give you too much of a season!

OrmRenewed · 17/01/2010 15:52

We did Dorset in May last year and we were freezing! But I think we overestimated the temperatures at that time of year. Summer it wasn't!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 17/01/2010 15:52

Take lots of layers for you all, and lots of bedding, sleep in hats if necessary! Put on layers before you get cold, put hot water bottles in beds to warm them up, take them out and out the children in!

We love camping and have been in May when there was ground frost in the mornings. Mind you, we've been in August and once had ground frost in the mornings

It will be fabulous!

Lucycat · 17/01/2010 19:08

Ooh I love those frosty mornings - nothing quite like a campsite in the frost! Warm coffee sitting wrapped up outside your tent while the rest of the site is asleep.
Although sitting outside in 18 c warmth at 11 pm in France drinking wine is hard to beat too!

Peachy · 17/01/2010 19:21

DS4 first went camping in very early June aged 5 weeks, you willbe fine.

However in anticipation for this year's early trips(after last eyras experiences) we have bought some great thermals in mountain warehouse toact as PJ'sfor the boys, andyyy to hats etc

Wego from April onwardsreally, depending on weather. It definitely comes down to equipment and planning, blankets under beds for insulation etc. And a good tent:always a good tent.

IloveNickClegg · 17/01/2010 19:44

i dont think it would be too cold - I would be more worries about the rain.

A cope of years ago we went camping at bank holiday in May and got flooded out ! Despite that we have had some good camping experiences since .

PlanetEarth · 17/01/2010 20:15

We've camped in Scotland in April (too cold, unless you're pretty hardy) and May - just fine, but obviously nights can be cool.

Too hot in June? Never experienced "too hot" when camping lol.

Lucycat · 17/01/2010 20:42

Peachy (or was it slubber?) will now regale you with the tale of 'the plastic glasses melting in the tent' as it was so hot.

We've had 40c in france in our tent and that was too hot!!

Peachy · 17/01/2010 20:50

Am I that repetitive LOL?

JennyPennyNAPPYWEB · 18/01/2010 13:29

Peachy - yes we went in June last year with DD2 being about 5 weeks! lol. Just thought with it being a month earlier it might be different. It was so hot, much hotter than when we went to tennerife in september

Am booking it in May probably, just waiting to hear from Haven as to if we can fit on a pitch. The national number said no but I eventuall insisted on talking to the park themselves who said it should be fine. They are having their pitch re-done at the moment so they don't want to say 100% yet so got to ring back Weds.

We have a gelert horizon 6 so think we should be OK. Although from reviews, one bedroom is drafty from the end door. Might stick DH in there and me and the girls in the other

Just been offered some free camping stuff on netmums! YAY. Was so worried about the cost of kitting us out fully.

OP posts:
Peachy · 20/01/2010 19:13

Have you got a baby sleeping bag? We have a nitestar, ds4 is a year older so has outgrown it.If you need it let me know before I offer it on freegle.

First timewewent was, according to DH,formum's anniversary so Whitsun.....and truth be told it was awfully coldand wet and I was regretting it but equally ahve never known a Whitsun like it; past years had seen us camping merrily in April with the other 3 boys.

I think it comes down to sense: you cancel if it gets too awful or go home.

JennyPennyNAPPYWEB · 25/01/2010 14:13

Hi - sorry just seen your post. We have a growbag, but its a thin summer one? If yours would be better than that then I would be very grateful if the offer still stands? I will send this as a CAT too as its been a while and you might not see it. Thank you very much, very kind of you
