camping in France summer 2010 - too expensive now or not?

We had a great time camping (well mobilehoming) in Brittany last summer.

I would really like to rebook again for this coming summer, the Loire this time - but not sure if it is going to be VERY expensive to change pounds to euros by the time we go. I have costed the holiday and it will be about £1800 for 6 days in a tent and then 4 days in a mobile home plus overnight ferry portsmouth - caen.

Do I go for it and book or wait and see? What are others doing?

It was interesting that last year the rep said they had had their quietest season for years, and there were lots of empty mobile homes on the site we were on (to our benefit as it wasn't crowded)

They said their "bread and butter" - retired folk who normally come May/June/July stayed away last year due to the drop in the pound.

If people aren't going to the Eurozone, where are they going?

I'm not sure I can face a wet week in crowded cornwall.

Mine liked the pool area too although it would have been better if the 'fast' slide hadn't been broken for 5 days and the big pool was absolutely freezing - boiler problems apparantely.
As we took our own tent we also got a crap pitch as the tour operators requested the biggest and best pitches. Our tent is 8x5m and we got a pitch that measured...yep about 8x5m - enough room to put the car beside the tent and that was it.

ssshh - go the end of august, its cheaper after 21st as a lot of people go home french Dutch and English all head off and the weather is still warm as ever

we camped with our own stuf at this ranchise this year on two ocassions (we moved around a lot with only two three nights in each site)

my dd2 loved the pools they have and slides we stayed at one very near the Pont du Gard

Keycamp have added a nice new facility to their booking site this year which shows you when they are down to the last one of a particular caravan at a site. So that might help you plan. HOwever if you are going for a two week holiday and want a particular site, it can begin to get tricky for them to fit you in as if a caravan is even booked for two days at the end of your stay it means you cant book it for two weeks. So its tricky. there are some good sites listed at www.bestfrenchcampsites.com and if you dont mind moving site or moving caravan you might get a bit more choice. I do hate it though when you get to a site and find out someone's got a much better deal or like us last year a lot of caravans were empty yet I thought I had booked the last one almost !

It is really expensive now but after rainy week in Cornwall last year we really wanted to go to France! We have to go in school holidays too now. Eurotunnel seems a lot cheaper than the ferry - £130 even though it means a lot more driving. We have also bought a tent. We have booked a Keycamp site but direct as we are camping with our own tent but thought we would book one of their's in the hope it will be good!!!! Still works out at about 500 euro for 12 nights but it has lots of facilities. We used to hire a chalet when the children were younger and we didn't have to go in the school holidays.

Hi ,

we have a mobile home in South France and an apartment in Lanzarote, both places are fabulous and short flights and cheap flights with Ryanair.. both places great for children, please let me know if you need anymore info.

We are taking our own caravan but going from Dover-Calais as we couldn't justify the extortionate ferry crossings to brittany. P&O were much cheaper than Eurotunnel, but the prices go up nearer the time rather than down. A couple of years ago we decided to hang fire and thought we'd get a good late deal from Keycamp etc, but the choice by June/July for Aug was very limiting.
I think a last minute package holiday deal woud be cheaper!
