tips for camping with a 3 yr old at a music festival

Taking Lottie to the Big Chill. II'll be about 5 months pregnant)
Have a 4 man tent for the 3 of us, best mate in her own tent next to us so she can take all the bags etc in with her.
Have a inflatable double bed.
That's it.

Have camped before but when I was pregnant with Lottie in France at a 5 star campsite, this is at a music festival.

What are the most important things you think i'll need?

What are you top tips.

(PS - I'm pretty laid back and not fussed about eating really healthily for 1 weekend and not hugely fussed about personal hygiene for the sake of one weekend either, just need Lottie to be safe, happy and enjoying herself.)

Thanks, TC x

nah, hc, you've BTDTGTTS!

(Just kidding, I was petrified every time, new babies are scary. But lovely... Good luck )

Trolley for bags,
Baby wipes for everyone,
Id tag with mobile number on childs wrist, not too visible but easy for security staff to find.
Charged mobile phone.
Loo roll in tied poly bag,
Anti bac wipes for porta loos,
Once you arrive point out what staff are wearing to child and even introduce child to some security/ stewarding staff so child more likely to approach them in the unlikely event they get lost.
Take basic first aid stuff like plasters etc, you might have to wait ages at St Johns when all you want is a plaster and they often want to fill out forms etc.
Torch,
Bum bag for phone keys and money, keep on at all times don't leave anything of value in tents. Some campsites have a left luggage facility.

Excuse me, coddy, my cousin went to Hay at the weekend and stayed in a v posh hotel in Hereford with Stephen Fry (diff rooms, obv) so there are pockets of civilisation!

Janh · 02/06/2005 21:10

Ah, well, hc, I never did that so it still scares me!

Thermals.

A potty so you don't have to take Lottie miles to the loos at night (or you, come to think of it!).

Thermals.

Are you cooking or buying food? If cooking, take instant stuff - supernoodles and things in cans. We've got a 2-litre pump-top flask that we fill with hot water so we can have hot drinks whenever we like without faffing with burners and kettles.

Thermals.

Wellies and a rainsuit for lottie so she can play in the mud (you can see I'm confident about the weather here). And lots of towels - they're never dry when you need them.

Thermals.

Plastic bags.

Fleecy bedsocks.

Earplugs in case your friend in the next tent snores.

Blankets.

A torch. Preferably one of those with a fluorescent strip light down the side.

Does Lottie have a trike?

Some "its raining and theres nothing on and we're stuck in the tent" toys.

A water carrier. Or some 3-litre bottles if you're not cooking - you'll still want drinks. Even if you're not cooking, a one-ring burner and a kettle are a good idea (argos sell them with gas cannister). Unless you don't require tea on intravenous drip like I do.

Will that do for starters? Sounds a depressing list but being cold and wet is miserable and its better to be prepared. It can all stay in the car if its sunny. (if its the Aug BH weekend then it will be sunny in Lincolnshire cos that's where we're camping with our 3yo and 6mo and I've booked nice weather ).

No tips but sounds fab, want to take the boys next year to a festival ( then 3 and 5 year old ) - something relaxed and friendly - maybe womad, cambridge folk festival.

Have fun, sounds brilliant

Thomcat · 02/06/2005 23:01

Thanks girls, lottie can't walk so light buggy and maybe our back pack as well are a m ust. Although she can't walk, so can't run away, i love the id braclet idea, will defo do that, thanks.

Making a list now.

It will be really cold at night won't it. Hmmm, oh well, we'll take v warm clothes for night and hopefully it'll be sunny and lully in August.

The list of what we take festival camping gets longer every year! Most stuff has been mentioned but you will need something to sit on, a torch (with batteries!), (DS2 says "Pot Noodles"!). It will get very cold when it gets dark. Put blankets under you (on top of the lilo) rather than over you- stops the cold seeping.

(DH & the boys are now playing "I packed for Cropredy and I took...". Teach me to answer "what are you writing so furiously?"!!!)
