Eweleaze farm - has anyone been, I have a few questions!...

I have booked a few nights in August for us and another family. Looking at the website it looks fairly huge, and suggests bikes for getting to the toilets, we have 4 under 4 between us, and so bikes might be pushing it, is it really that far to get to loos and showers? Are we going to have to pitch next door to them. Also how far is it down to the beach?

Mainly though, is it nice?(I'm panicking because I'm the one that googled and booked and don't want to feel responsible if it is crap)

Thankyou!

hi Kalo why did you hate it?

We liked it but we did think it was a bit overrated, but that's probably because we live in an area with loads of great beaches and good campsites and we have lots of places we can make campfires so those things aren't such a novelty for us.

kalo12 · 11/08/2009 18:50

i didn't think there was much love gone into it. it felt like a sort of refugee camp for middle classes. everyone was looking stressed. the communal barn seemed like forced interaction, where no one actually spoke to anyone. I just didn't think it was relaxed at all. Straw bales delivered to you for two pound fifity, etc,.

I think going down that death slide dirt track to descend into the camp made it seem stressful too, and then all the burning damp braken creating such thick smoke.

I thought it was all a bit 'Emperors new clothes'. Tyring to look cool but really just trying to fleece as much money as possible, with not much care for people's well being.

Its not that I am looking for something more structured, i'm very happy in very basic sites or wild camping, but I just didn't feel this was the real mcCoy.

We left after a four days, even though we had paid for seven. Went somewhere else, and we were so relieved to get out

hazeyjane · 11/08/2009 19:42

Oh no!

We are going day at the end of the week (you know, when the rain is supposed to be coming in!)

I was feeling 100% positive about it, until your post Kalo! I'm confused by the communal barn, what is it? why do people go in there?

'death slide dirt track' sounds terrifying, is this driving in or walking? 'Burning bracken' Jeez it sounds like a scene out of Apocolypse Now, I'm terrified!

well to be fair we had torrential rain for four days, went with a toddler with no wellies and a total non sleeper so I was biased.

if you have older kids they will love it. I'm sure the rain won't be as bad as last week.

We had a bad pitch too. It is a great campsite, just not really my style.

Anyway i'm anti social

janinlondon · 12/08/2009 09:48

Kalo - curious to know where you went instead? We have such a hard time finding places where fires are allowed.....

Sunflower36 · 12/08/2009 21:36

I went with a 2 year old and a 7 month old and had a great time. I didn't venture to the communual barn I didn't feel the need . We made friends with the tents both sides of us, everyone I met was really chatty and seemed very nice and nothing like a forced refugee camp for the middle classes at all.

We did have torrential rain for a day too, and the road in and out of the site was a bit hairy but the guys with 4x4's were always on hand to drag you out of the mud.

I camped at the back of Chicken field, close to loos, water and showers, no long treks at all. It was definitely one of the quieter fields and didn't have any of the pretence that some of the other fields may have had.

I had a lovely time and I am sure you will too.

hazeyjane · 12/08/2009 22:28

Thankyou Sunflower.

Kalo, it sounds like you had a really rough time

Well I am packing now, and dh is muttering somthing about needing to buy a trailer for the car.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the weather, and am getting all excited about going.

I'll let you know how I got on!

We went last year and had a fab time. We camped in the seaview field and there were plenty of loos. We had a camp fire every night and there were people selling freshly caught fish. Kids loved the pizzas.

Wish I was going this year

kalo12 · 13/08/2009 13:32

take your wellies

janinlondon · 13/08/2009 15:20

Hazey and Kadge - have you looked at Metcheck for Weymouth for next week?????! Looks like a welly-free zone to me! (I will be there too)

specialmagiclady · 14/08/2009 11:13

I was there 2 years ago the day of The Fire! It was our first time under canvas - watched the meteor showers, sang round camp fire, amazing. Our - experienced camper friends - hated it, though, as it was disappointing that it was so noisy with events etc. In a way they ruined it for us by kvetching all weekend - we were so agape with wonder at it all!

I found compost toilets daunting at first, it was a schlep (oy vey what is it with all the yiddish today?) to the "real" ones but once I was pissed I didn't care, then I didn't look back!

hazeyjane · 16/08/2009 21:15

Well we got back today, and we have just finished unpacking.

It was fantastic. We were very lucky with the weather, it rained a bit, but not enough for it to get really muddy (I can imagine it would be a bit of a nightmare if it was very wet)

We stayed in the Flat Field, so no sea view, but it was very sheltered and loads of room. The toilets and showers were great, I really liked the atmosphere. The only shame was that we couldn't get down to the sea, we found it too difficult with 4 under 4's to find a way down there. If any one on here managed it - please tell us how!?

Will definately be going back, so thankyou everyone for all the tips.

BTW, if anyone is going and comes across this thread. Take some antibacterial handgel! (no sinks in toilets)

mumtoallgirls · 17/08/2009 23:02

Thanks for that Hazeyjane. Going with three under three next week!!!

hazeyjane · 18/08/2009 08:03

Mumto3girls, I am extremely jealous!

I would go back again next week, if only we didn't have to put up the tent!

Hi Hazeyjane, there are some steps down to the sea, if you head along the coast path towards the PGL centre (away from Weymouth) you get to some steps.

We climed up the rope when it was wet and raining, it was definitely a challenge with a baby in a backpack and a 2 year old screaming 'I don't like it mummy' and refusing to move - but we made it!!

I'd go back tomorrow too and I am definitely booking for next year.

mumtoallgirls · 20/08/2009 22:50

Hazeyjane: Glad you're jealous..... if i can say that.... was beginning to get nervous after reading a few posts.... now looking forward to it.... :O

3rdnparty · 08/09/2009 08:41

just a quick update.. had a fab time though dozy dh went swimming with his glasses on at swanage on day 3 so i had to do all the driving..... entrance road a bit hairy when wet

site great loved big fridge with cold beer/cider/perry/wine in... solar showers worked really well even on overcast days

camped in corner field no sea view but lot less windy, would definately go back ...

though a bit of a glamping olympics - never seen so many bell tents -and a yurt and 2 full size tipis ...still cant work out how you pack them into a car as enormous - lots of bunting and ball gowns also spotted.

so probably the best site ever for tent nosiness and people watching! felt very utilitarian
