Petrol lanterns. Good? Safe?

Does anyone use a petrol-fuelled lantern? I'm interested in comments about how they compare with anything battery-operated. And safety around tents/young children.

(Thinking of buying one. We have about a million torches, some of which have gadgets to convert to lanterns. But are going to a woodland campsite in the summer, which I've been told is very, very dark at night, and think we might want a more general light.)

Sorry I don't have any experience of petrol lanterns, but didn't want your thread to go unanswered. I'm not sure how safe they sound to me, but I am risk averse . I didn't even like the sound of gas lanterns so we have a rechargeable one. But I bet a petrol one gives a nicer cosier light though.

Have you tried this website they know everything about everything on there ?

We have a petrol lamp which we use in our tent, don't have it lit until dd's go to bed as I am worried about them knocking it over.

It gives a really nice light and quite a lot of heat.

Reading the instructions/warnings on the side of the lamp, it says not to use it in an enclosed area such as a tent - only discovered this after several camping trips!

We make sure that are tent is well vented when the lamp is on and switch it off and allow it to cool before we go to bed.

It hardly uses any petrol at all so don't think it actually produces a lot of fumes.
