We are off this weekend for our first family expedition. DD's are 6 and 3. What do we need to take? Am I missing anything? Is there a definitive list anywhere?

Tent
Footprint
Carpet
Mallet
Folding chairs
Sleeping bags
Matress / sleeping mat things
Gas hob
Spare gas canister
Kettle
Saucepans
Wooden spoons
Scissors
Sharp knife
Corkscrew
Chopping board
Salt pepper, ketchup
Portapotty thing (gift!)
Card games etc for children
Washing up bowl
Tea towels
Washing up liquid
Cutlery
Plastic crockery
Cups
Cool box (stocked)
Washbags and clothes
Torch
Lantern
Sunhat and Buff for bad hair

Am I missing anything obvious??

TIA

Nope, no rubber gloves. Oh well that's me out of the washing up then .

MumHadEnough · 21/05/2009 11:42

Bucket with a bin bag in it with cat litter at the bottom for during the night pees. Fabulous, you just get up in the morning, take the bag out and the litter has absorbed all the pee!

purpleduck · 21/05/2009 12:00

I do a boys and a girls toiletry kit, with toothbrushes, toothpaste, shower gel etc.

jambutty · 21/05/2009 12:06

dustpan and brush

j cloths

Big scissors
delta pegs

bunnyrabbit · 21/05/2009 12:46

mollyroger · 21/05/2009 13:10

Mumhadenough - but whatdo you do with the wee-soaked cat litter?

Thrifty · 21/05/2009 18:01

dont forget your....
washing up liquid,
scourer,
cloths x 2
tea towels x 2

windbreak for cooking behind, general privacy and hanging wet towels on!
pegs (as towels will blow off windbreak!)
hot water bottles (it was cold when we went at easter though!)

and get a 99p doormat from your local cheapy shop (wilko's or similar).

katiek123 · 21/05/2009 19:50

potty! for middle of the night business!

Mercy · 21/05/2009 19:54

Peachy, good point re trews

My dc wear wellies and shorts when camping, covers all bases!

katiek123 · 21/05/2009 20:07

oooh - hadn't seen intriguing cat lit suggestion - much more exotic than a feeble potty

OP - i cannot stress enough the importance of pillows. seriously. i know it seems a luxury but having forgotten them just once i will never ever do so again. also - i always take an eye mask and ear plugs. call me a pathetic weed but it does get light at 4am...and the birds are purty loud...all this nature bit is fab but it's not so good for a wimpy light sleeper like me

katiek123 · 21/05/2009 20:08

ps
LOL at bunnyrabbit's excel spreadsheet - my DH wishes he was married to you BR - he is always telling me he wishes i was more organised and had a 'system' for packing for camping!

flowerfairy · 21/05/2009 20:24

After are last years summer holiday, we now have a little box with tent repairing items-sticky tape stuff eg gaffer tape, mini sewing kit, waterproof sealing liquid stuff. We had a ripped peg tape and the windbreak went through the door in the porch which dh had to go and find a shop at 8pm in Cornwall, where there wasn't a B&Q down the road. So now i always take on with us. HTH

blithedance · 21/05/2009 20:27

After many years of haphazard 2-person camping I have no choice but to develop a Proper System this time. After consulting with MIL, she suggests having a Little Book with the definitive list in that you take out each time and can improve year on year.

Also 2 or 3 plastic crates permanently packed with the equipment so you can just grab and go rather than rushing around saying "have we got matches?"

Definitely earplugs, last year I had the bad luck to end up on 2 campsites near all night railways. That woke up the kids and then everyone on the site needed earplugs

Would a lidded bucket like this be suitable? I have 2 old ones in the loft.

mwff · 21/05/2009 21:49

katiek - drink enough whiskey and you can leave out the earplugs, eyemask and pillows

licquorice · 22/05/2009 08:45

Bunnyrabbit I would love your spread sheet if have time to email to me. i do everything on excel but have no time at mo.

bunnyrabbit · 22/05/2009 10:28

Hi licquorice,
Have sent you one for camping with a toddler for a week, (so no travel cot, baby bags, change bag/mat or nappies) but have others sheets if you'd like to be more specific about your trip.

zanz1bar · 22/05/2009 10:31

My best find a camping cocktail shaker, a must have.
Put up tent , mix martini, give up on rest of day.

muffle · 22/05/2009 10:36

DS informed me this morning that when we go camping we must take the plug-in electric socket that powers from the car, and the espresso machine, so that me and daddy can have nice coffee for breakfast. Sensible boy!

zanz1bar · 22/05/2009 10:40

Muffle your Ds sounds like my kinda boy

BottySpottom · 22/05/2009 10:50

We leave everything in a crate and then just pick up the crate to go.

Don't forget potty and wine. And paper plates - life's too short for washing up when camping.

bunnyrabbit · 22/05/2009 11:19

We have a crate too... pulled it out the loft last night and has all sorts of stuff in it. Even a plastic fish slice and some candles!

Muffle. Love your DS. Now you just have to train him to make the coffee!

EverythingsPink · 22/05/2009 12:36

Hi Bunnyrabbit

could you please send me your spreadsheet too?

Thanks

Cosmosis · 22/05/2009 13:31

2 lidded stackable crates in the loft here, that can just be got out and put in car. contains all the necesaries like torch, matches etc etc and also a few tins of food as well.

makes life a lot easier.

DoNotAnnoy · 22/05/2009 14:47

So....I think we may be buying a tent for our first camp this summer.

I assume that if we buy a tent and all of the things on this list(s) on this thread that will do us?

Will it really all go in teh boot of a car (Picasso).

last time we went camping we tagged along with someone else. There was 1 child and we still managed to fill the boot of 2 cars and a trailer....

VanillaPumpkin · 22/05/2009 16:34

Oh this is all such fab info thank you. Have baby wipes and DH agreed about the pillows which was interesting considering he wanted to do proper camping in a field .

My Fat airics are here inflating as we speak!
