No one told me it was half term!

Totally panicing, been planning a lovely meander around England for ten days from the 22nd and have just discovered it's not only a bank holiday this weekend but it's also English half term (we live in Scotland) and also national camping week or something like that. Unsurprisingly I can't book anywhere nice or haven't found anywhere yet. I was so looking forward to a nice quiet rural campsite, lots of wine, me, DS, DP and the stars after a very stressful year. Now it looks like we'll be jammed up against a caravan somewhere grotty if anything at all! Can't even stay in Scotland as we have to be at a family reunion in Bath by the 27th. Any ideas? Feel like such an idiot. (thanks for listening to my rant if nothing else, I do know it's my own ignorant fault )

oops. Get mnhq to give us somewhere to put all our school holiday dates

Have you taken a look around the independent sites, and also the camping and caravanning club ones? Weirdly we're staying in that area too next week - but we booked it in Jan

That's a good idea! DS is only one so I'm a bit out of touch with schoolies.
We were hoping for a couple of nights somewhere on route (Edinburgh to Bath), my ideal plan went North Yorks then Derbyshire. We're staying with family in Bath so not homeless there but DS is too small and not used to travelling in a car (we've borrowed one for the week).

Well done on your forward planning, I'll learn my lesson next time!

too small to do the big drive in one go I meant, lost my head mid sentence!

yes I knew what you meant anyway - it's a bit of a mare travelling much more than an hour or two with a 1yo. Not a baby that sleeps all the way (but fingers crossed he might) but not old enough to entertain themselves much either. We always travelled in the evening when ours were tiny - in fact still do they're 3,5 & 8. Put them in their p-j's, nice reclining seat and neck cushions, drink of milk, job done Unfortunately not always practical to get on sites though, so we've often had to do what you are doing and do several one-night stops on the way up/down!!

forestry commission sites in new forest have avialability, defo. homesley is nice. hollands wood and roundhill even nicer, supposedly, but avial only from monday night. (i know, i just booked)

schmu · 17/05/2009 16:20

sorry. not on your route.

baiyu · 18/05/2009 20:49

Good ideas thank you! I hadn't looked at forestry commission ones. I'm now thinking of staying in Scotland and having a wee weekend trip somewhere then heading South on tues when (hopefully) the roads won't be so hectic as over the weekend.

I wouldn't have thought the campsites would be full up. It's still early in year for camping, at least it is for me and the weather is pants, torrential rain in the south all this week so far.

the ones we tried for this coming weekend (bank hoiday and half term) were all booked up but we were very limited on area

good luck - i am sure if you want somewhere small - eg farmers field they will crop up
