Children in adult sleeping bags

Is there any reason why a toddler cannot sleep in an adult sleeping bag, or am I missing something? Its just that we have 2 very good adult sleeping bags and would prefer the children to sleep in them to stay warm. We can have a duvet until we can afford something else. Is there a reason why the children cannot sleep in the adult bags?

I can't see any reason why not. Both my kids have slept in adult sleeping bags when they were small and they loved it.

My 4yr and 7yr olds sleep in adult bags, we fold the end over underneath them...the only danger would be small toddlers possibly slipping down inside them and suffocating I guess!

Slipping down, if you trun the end under you are relying on their bady weight to keep it under - and young dc tend to move around a lot so the end comes unfolded and they can still slip down. If you turn the top back then they ar under a double layer of sleeping bag and will probably still over heat. You can run the zip down and out them in the bottom but you still risk theunzipped part getting pulled over them as they move around (and in this case it would possibly cover their head too).

I wouldn't do it myself, but I am particularly senstive as my little sister had this happen to her when she was about 4yo. I can still remember my dads panic when he found her, luckily he woke up with that "somethings is not right" feeling. She was so over heated goodness only knows what would have happened if she had been there for 4 more hours until morning. She was beyind the stage where she could have woken up by herself.

Right...I may head to the shops before camping at the weekend then. DD is only 2, so she would be more suited to a proper child bag.

I know friends who have their kids sleep in an adult bag use a belt to gather up and "close" the bag off below the level their kids feet will reach, effectively shortening the bag. Its what we intend to do once we get round to getting boy a sleeping bag. He was in a grow bag type last summer ( he was 2) but is too tall now (3 & 98cm).

What a great idea UniS...

That's what we do UniS, children are 4 and 2.5. The reason I use adult bags is because I havent been able to find childrens ones that are 3 season. We camp while its still quite cold at night so they appreciate being warm.

I thought about tying a knot in the bottom, but a belt sounds like a good idea.

ds and dd have always slept in adult bags ..simply because they are much warmer than any 'kids' bags that you could find at the time. DD has been in one since she was 18 months. I just tied string half way down the bag to close off the bottom half.

Friends use the same approach - they use a long cable tie around the sleeping bag to make it short enough for their 3 year old.
