Can anyone recommend a nice campsite, preferably near a beach? We're going to take our own tent.

no idea. i went with my french exchange family way way back in the 80's. It was beautiful, secret beaches, freedom to cycle everywhere.
I would love to go back, so keeping an eye on this thread. Someone please find a campsite, please.

I have stayed at these two, both are lovely in different ways:

Great site with pool, restaurant etc. but not huge and has a nice family feel, you can walk into Ars En Re for shopping etc.

Fantastic municipal campsite on the walls of St Martin de Re - the nicest town on the island imo. More of an 'urban' campsite, but in a really nice way. So handy for popping down to the harbour for an icecream!

Both are walkable to the sea, but not to fantastic beaches, you'd probably need to drive to a sandy one.

Have a great time, it is a brilliant place for a holiday, I am going again this year.

(BTW, I love the Cazalet Chronicles.)

Antioche is really nice - walk through to a lovely beach from the back of the campsite.

(not sure I did that right).

But it does depend what you want - this one is quite 'back to nature'. No organised activities or pool or anything.

It was just what we wanted but might not suit everyone! Ile de Re is beautiful, have fun.

We've stayed at the Eurocamp site on the Ile de Re...but many many years ago. The Ile de Re is very very expensive and crowded in the summer. It costs quite a bit to come and go from the island, but it is beautiful and the weather is excellent. If we were to go again, we'd stay on the mainland and do a day trip or two to the Ile de Re.

Tomate that sounds like the kind of thing - we're not looking for Eurocamp. Can you tell me a bit more? Anything at all for the kids to do? Was it near a village/ bar? Shops?
