So if you go to small, quiet sites....

What do you do if it rains?

On all my family holidays, when i was growing up Mum always took us to 'holiday camp' types of sites, the types with club houses, entertainment and bingo i know that a lot of MN campers hate these types of sites, but what do you do when it chucks it down with rain?

Me and DP went to a site in Newquay last May,when i was pregnant, and the weather was just awful. I don't know what we would have done without the pub/club-house.

So what do you do when it's raining sideways outside?

go into little towns and look round and go on drives and sleep in the car. read books in the tent. sleep.

Yes choose a small quiet site that has attractions/towns within reach, so you can do things like castles, aquariums, museums or even the cinema

We go surfing - you're wet anyway! We go shopping, find an indoor pool or stay in the tent and play board or card games. We read and the girls do colouring or just play - or they put on their waterproofs and go outside and we drink coffee and read the papers.

I often find with Cornwall that if one coast is raining then the other isn't, so we sometimes just drive somewhere to see, or we drive the camper somewhere with a lovely view and have lunch or a cuppa in it.

with children - swimming, cinema, bowling, soft play if we have to! we always take games, books and drawing stuff to do in the tent too.

sometimes we just tog up and go out for a walk or cycle anyway - particularly if the site has a drying room.

without kids - read in the tent, potter in a local town, go to a local pub, play cards

We go for days out to indoor places. We are National Trust members so there's always somewhere we can go. Go bowling. Find a nice, family pub and have a drink/meal and make sure you have a good book at the kids have something to entertain themselves, drawing books (ours love their DS lites) that passes a few hours away and you are warm and dry.
The campsite we've just been to was quiet but had a little games room for the children with a pool table, bookcase full of books and an electronic game table so the girls were happy to play in there with their friends while we sat in the tent.
Kids like getting wet too so you could even have a day and just let them put their wellies and raincoats on and get soaked!!! As long as you've got a campsite that has nice, hot showers they can warm up in afterwards, it's a great idea (might want to make this a last day of the camping trip activity though so you don't have to worry about drying coats out!! lol)

go home

Sparkler · 17/04/2009 10:32

Swim, often. As long as it's warm enough.

Or go out.

Or sit in tent with hot chocolate and watch dvd on laptop - a option not available when I were a lass...

We are off this weekend with DD (age 4.1). The forecast is wet wet wet! Our campsite has a toilet and shower block and um.... trees!
We'll take a few board games like Triv, Blokus, Qwirkle etc. We'll pack a lot of books, pads of paper, sticker books and a few model animals. We'll visit whatever the nearest local attractions are, maybe take swimming stuff. We'll pack wet weather gear so DD can play out if she wants. She can make her own entertainment whilst we read. We will take her bike so she can ride if she wants.
Can't wait!
