My friend has a caravan there and says it's great

Onlyaphase · 15/04/2009 18:49

I live near Barnard Castle as well - can I help at all?

Onlyaphase · 15/04/2009 18:49

And DLI - am delighted that a fellow MNer lives near here! Thought I was all alone!

DLI · 15/04/2009 18:55

juneybean · 15/04/2009 19:01

(Lives in Washington )

DLI · 15/04/2009 19:03

hi juneybean i live in Shildon (between Darlington and Bishop Auckland)

troutpout · 15/04/2009 19:18

ooo responses
Oh good it's quite near Darlington then.Ds wants to go to Railway museum there.
Would it be really far to travel to Beamish from there?...any idea of travel time?

Doodle2U · 15/04/2009 19:19

Dunno but one of my Grandad's was born there!

DLI · 15/04/2009 19:20

There is also a railway museum at Shildon "the locomotion" which is not bad. I would say BC is about half an hour ish away from Beamish

Onlyaphase · 15/04/2009 20:03

There is also Lightwater Valley - theme park with rollercoasters etc about 45 mins from BC, and lots of other things to do. How old is DS? Any interests in particular?

DL1 - I live near Winston, about 7 miles from Barnard Castle.

troutpout · 15/04/2009 20:54

ds..Industrial revolution..machines..trains

dd likes animals...

Thanks so much...looks like we won't be short of things to interest him anyway

OP posts:
DLI · 15/04/2009 21:10

there is a war camp near Stanhope - can't remember its name but ds might like that.

DLI · 15/04/2009 21:10

should have said pow war camp

Onlyaphase · 15/04/2009 21:16

For trains, what I usually suggest to guests with train-obsessed small boys is that they drive to Darlington station (30 mins tops) get the train to York (30 mins) and look at the railway museum there which I think has the original Stevenson's Rocket engine plus lots more in it. York isn't the best place to drive to or park, and this is the best (and wet-day-friendly) way to see it IMO.

Barnard Castle is surrounded by farms and animals. Can't move for lambs at the moment.

foxytocin · 15/04/2009 21:20

Darlington to Beamish is not v. far at all. Darlington to Chester-le-Street is about 20 mins and from there to Beamish is another 10, I suspect.

Washington Juneybean? Did you see the Durham Meetup thread? t'is near you.

Threadworm · 15/04/2009 21:21

DLI, I had guessed you must be a County Durham gal, with a name like that.

foxytocin · 15/04/2009 21:22

There is great walking to be had near Stanhope. DLI and Onlyaphase, i didn't mean to not include you to the meetup too. Maybe you'll find it too far? (hope not)

DLI · 15/04/2009 21:26

threadworm - i get what you mean but its actually my initials

ThingOne · 15/04/2009 22:33

Onlyaphase, you've forgotten about the railway museum in Darlington. They built the new steam engine. It's small, and not a patch on Shildon or York, but still worth a trip for small people.

I buggered off at 18 but we do a lot of trains when we go home .

juneybean · 16/04/2009 15:56

DLI do you mean Eden Camp?
