We have hired a campervan for next week and have decided to go to North Norfolk. We don't know the area at all and have whittled it down to these three.

deepdale

pinewoods

High Sand Creek at Stiffkey.

Have read lots of reviews on ukcampsite but would like to hear the MN voice of wisdosm.

They are all really lovely places - I'm afraid I can't comment on the campsites themselves, but the locations are all fantastic. If it were me I'd go for Pinewoods just because Wells is great, and I know the beach.

If you go to Stiffkey, you might need to know that the locals pronounce it Stookey.

Is Pinewoods walking distance to Holkham? I'd go for that one, gives you beach and the estate to explore.

troutpout · 05/04/2009 08:51

Oh Pinewoods...try that one... go on (and then tell us what it was like!). I've long fancied that one. It's in such a beautiful spot (i used to live in Norfolk so know the area quite well).
That's the one where you can hire a beach hut for the week as well isn't it?
Oh and go and catch a boat from Morston quay and see the seals...it's fab

Pinewoods would be a fairly hearty walk to Holkham - they're close, but not that close. You'd struggle with small kids. I'd say 10 mins in the car between the two. But looking at the Google map, it looks like you could walk along the coastline and that might be quicker. The campsite is quite a way out of Wells itself, but a little train thing runs between the two.

10 minutes is probably overstating it.

fatzak · 05/04/2009 18:46

OK so looking like it's Pinewoods - if we haven't left it too late and not got round to calling!

We stayed at Deepdale - lovely quiet, clean site handy for Holkham, Hunstanton and the seals at the National Trust place (name of which has completely escaped me). Small site, nothing fancy at all.

fatzak · 05/04/2009 20:17

We have had to rule out Deepdale as we will want electic hook up and looks like they don't have it.

Am having a moment that we should go to the Forest of Dean instead as it's another place we have never been to but the weather looks slightly better in Norfolk!

in laws live in burnham market so know both pretty well.

Deepdale is very nice, with a decent cafe, but beach is 'away'

pinewoods is massive, with loads of statics, and about a mile to wells along the quay (although there is a train), But then the beach is there. More to do for children but not quite as 'nice'.

hi-pinewoods-biggish but fab beach. clippesby is fab but maybe not right location for you-have stayyed twice-lovely in every way. norfolk is fab-enjoy!

ZipadiSoozi · 06/04/2009 21:25

Searles of Hunstanton is fab, day and night entertainment, manageable not too busy area. Indoor/Outdoor swimming pools, jacuzi etc!

Have a fab time wherever you go.

They are all nice in different ways. Depends what you want. We stay at High Sands most years, there are less facilities but that's what we like. It's quite wild. It's also a long walk to the sea.

Pinewoods would be better if you don't want to lift your pram miles over muddy marsh.

I haven't stayed in Deepdale but a lot of friends do and seem to enjoy it.

fatzak · 11/04/2009 12:38

Well we ended up at Pinewoods and had a wonderful time. When we first arrived we were a bit worried it might be a bit too noisy as there were loads of statics etc, but as we were there this week just gone, it was pretty quiet. The beach is just fantastic and Wells was a lovely little town. We went through Deepdale and Stiffkey and I think we made the right choice with Pinewoods!

If you go to North Norfolk again, I can heartily recommend Kelling Heath near Holt. We've had two week-long summer holidays here in years past and it's in a beautiful woodland setting. The nearest seaside towns are Cromer and Sheringham, both about ten minutes away by car. The North Norfolk Railway's Poppyline runs right next to the site and you can hear and see the steam trains coming and going during the day. There are loads of walks, lots of intelligent wildlife-themed activities for kids, bat watching, ghost story walks, I spy stuff, all that kind of thing. There are indoor and outdoor pools, a small club with live acts, a shop (although being a cheapskate of the first order, I avoided this and drove to Morrison's on the outskirts of Cromer instead!), bike hire, laundry room and the best, cleanest toilets and showers I've ever seen in years of camping. The site is very well run and the well spaced camping pitches are clearly marked and numbered, either serviced or not, take your pick. They also had a security patrol every evening which was reassuring and they have a zero tolerance policy towards any nuisance behaviour, not that we encountered any. Because of the woodland/heathland setting, you don't feel at all crowded or imposed upon and there's plenty of room for everyone to enjoy themselves - we enjoyed it so much the first year, we booked again for the following one and I'm a VERY particular camper!
