One long weekend in a yurt or the tent of our dreams?

DH and I spent a week in a luxury yurt last year, it was amazing. We loved it so much that this year we booked it for First May bank holiday.

We also intended this year to buy a new tent, our dream tent, to take camping where-ever we go, including abroad, something to build on it is fab.

We have arranged to go camping in the last may day too, with some friends. We are going to a nice little spot just in cornwall, we will take the canoes, the men will go mackeral fishing off the canoes and the kids are all coming too. We had intended to get this tent for then.

DH lost his job, I am 7 weeks pg, 11 weeks when we go to the yurt, 14 when we go with friends. We cannot now afford to do the Yurt and the tent, as they are the same price. That is a LOT of money. So, we have to do one or the other.

One hand, the yurt means we do nothing apart from get there and chill out. But that will be it, possibly for the year. But we love it love it love it.

Other hand. We buy this tent, we can go when we like, with friends, without friends, will have it when baby no 2 is born, and we can have some breaks even if DH is not working. BUT, how much camping will we do? Would it be worth it this year?

WWYD?

oh and we will be able to cancel as we have not paid for yurt yet, will be happy to lose retainer if we chose not to go, it will get filled as it is very popular.

Where is the Yurt? I ahve wanted to stay in one for AGES- do you have a link?

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 02/04/2009 21:07

I'd buy the tent. Well, maybe not that tent, but deffo a tent which you can use again and again. Long term investment, rather than a long weeknd.

I would buy the dream tent, because with a single weekend away there is always a risk it won't live up to expectations (eg someone will be ill, the weather will be awful) but with the tent you will always have the next trip to look forward to.
I love the idea of a dream tent

kathy - thank you, me too! Mary - you don;t like the tent then? We stayed in one once, it can float! It is very warm in cold weather as it is cotton, and cool in the summer (perhaps not so much in UK!). We are going to buy some throws for the ground and it will in time become our own little hippy tent! It will last for a long long time as long as we look after it.

I would buy the tent - do a weekend away when you would have gone to teh yurt and then away again with friends then lots over the summer!

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 02/04/2009 21:17

I kind of like the tent but it is a bit of a hippy thing statement

Oh go for it, I do like the idea of a tent which is warm in winter. Blardy freezing in ours. I do not wish to find out if any tent can float though!

So, are you decided?

Kathyis6incheshigh · 02/04/2009 21:18

Do you have a tent already which is usable but just not your dream tent? Or would another option be to have the yurt trip but get a cheapo one for other trips?

Still on balance I would buy the tent... if your dh is unemployed for a long time you will appreciate having it, if he gets another job soon you can book another yurt.

kalo12 · 02/04/2009 21:20

I would go to the yurt, and borrow a tent to go to cornwall then buy the tent of your dreams another year when you are back in the camping market.

pavlovthepregnantcat · 02/04/2009 21:22

yes, you are right. We can do the yurt again another time. Its just well, so excited by it.

We don't have another tent. We sold it just before DD was born as DH insisted it was too small, then realised it would have been fine for a while. However he has been really prickly about taking his baby camping before now. He is a bit protective of her . But now this year, we can go! And next year, he will go with a newborn, like it or not!

Thing is about buying another tent, if we do that/or this one, need to buy everything that goes with it. Well not everything, but some new things, mattress, new stove as our old one is broken. This is another reason why we either buy tent and all that comes with it, or the yurt.

But as you say, once we have the tent, it is there, once we have everything, we can go camping for free if we want to.

Kalo - see, there is another option! We had considered that. We might be able to borrow a tent, and perhaps some bits and bobs. We have some stuff already, and those we are going camping with also have most things we will need (there will be 6-8 of us, plus 3 children).
