or knows anything about camping in Denmark?
Thought we'd try somewhere different this year, after last summers awful trip to the south of France.
and
As I have viking crazy sons, thought Denmark might be good.
Welcome any tips/advice/recommendations as I know nothing!

Found this website yesterday whilst looking at Legoland. Might be useful.

Thanks Chippy, that's great.
Anyone want to recommend an area of Denmark? Jutland, south? East? West?

I camped in West Jutland as a child and have been there many times since as I've got family there. It is beautiful with wide windswept beaches (great surfing), little villages and many nice campsites and things to do with kids. The northern tip of Jutland is famous for its incredible light and the artists who came to paint there at Skagen. Overall it's very flat - a bit like Holland or Belgium, child friendly, often quite windy but really mellow and you can often have qquite nice weather. Also they haven't got the Euro yet, which is excellent news for UK tourists these days... You could try this for starters: www.dk-camp.dk/sites/West_Jutland/

Can highly recommend the Harwich-Esbjerg ferry link if you're taking the car.

And Copenhagen ROCKS - with or without kids, especially with bikes... It's even got a brand new beach with views of Sweden in the distance! If you're looking for something more action packed, that's the area to go for I reckon. I'm sure you can find some nice campsites not too far from the city.

That is brilliant KHS, Thanks so much.
I've just looked at the cost of the ferry though... it's a £1000! !!!!!!
OMG. I might have to rethink.

Ferry is pricey but fabulous.

We've camped in Denmark - the sites are often awesomely good. Areawise, I haven't camped there, but the Zealand coast north of Copenhagen is lovely. We went to Gilleleje (stayed in a cottage) and nowhere near exhausted the things to do in the week we spent. It's a quickish trip on the train to both Copenhagen and the Sweden ferry Helsingor - Helsingborg (watching the Swedes do a booze cruise is entertainment in itself, especially as they bring the empties back from previous trips)

Wow-the ferry definitely wasn't that much last year, but we booked early. Haven't they heard of the cerdit crunch? Ryainair flies to several places on Jutland - maybe that's the way to go? Also try Easyjet if you want to fly.

ingles2 · 21/03/2009 20:15

I know! Couldn't believe it! I'm looking for a cheap option this year.
Can't fly as we've got the tent etc. So I'm looking at ferry to Holland and then driving.
or we could go to France...
again!
Thanks MrsBoring I'm sure it would be wonderful, if we could just get there without breaking the bank

Bit late to this but we've camped 3 times, once with children there.

For the ferry, consider getting a YHA membership, costs £18 but can get you 10% off. There may well be other discounts but agree it can work out expensive. Also think about taking your own food, maybe at least for the evening meals or if you are camping you may have a cool box anyway.

Campsites are often well run and have good facilities, many of them have a children's playground for example and often they have pools, kitchens. They are quite reasonable for the price but you often have to pay for showers, hot water is usually free, so we bathed the kids ina orblieb to save a bit of money or they came and had a shower with us.

For food, check out Netto's, kitchens are usually free and have good equipment.

Driving and public transport in DK is easy and also cycling, it's quick to get to most places. Admission can be steep as the price for children seems to be quite high from a young age but there's lots of free things to do.

My favourite camping places are-
Charlottenlund in Copenhagen but do book this or you won't get in www.campingcopenhagen.dk/gb/gbwel.html

Mons Klint www.campingmoensklint.dk/engelsk/default.asp

Faaborg (but can't find a link)

there's many others we have enjoyed though.

For Viking attractions, do go to Roskilde (can be done as a day trip from Copenhagen),
trelleborg near Slaglese and Jelling. There are lots of viking stuff and burial mounds dotted all over the place.

We also liked Egeskov castle on Funen, a day trip to Aero, and of course Legoland and Tivoli.
