Our UK Camping forum has all the information you need on finding the right equipment for your tent or caravan.

What do you use in/ with your tent to keep warm (e.g. SIG, footprint, blankets below, above, etc...)?

Have been avidly reading all the helpful tips on here and am trying to decide what we need. First priority = decent tent, 2nd is to decide what is necessary for sleeping.

The tent we are thinking of is this one or a little bigger. It has a SIG.

We own 2 good sleeping bags.

What else do we need to keep us all warm, dry and snug?

Dses age 2 and 4, first trip will be 2 nights at Easter.

I have that exact tent

had the same one last year but it was faulty so yesturday got it again

from ground to me i have

Footprint ground sheet (to keep SIG clean)
SIG
picnic rug (£3 morrisons)
foam mat
air bed
fleece throw (ikea £2) as an undersheet
sleeping bag
ME (in warm fleece PJs and ski socks)
duvet
fleece throw

will be doing this for 3 nights at easter regardless of weather!

That is some serious tent action, nannyL and wildthings.

And nannyL, you sound like an expert on layering up your sleeping arrangements! I think I will follow your formula, minus one or two layers (am a bit on the hot-blooded side).

Any tips for the kids? This is what we were thinking:

footprint
SIG
emergency blankets
foam mats
duvet
sleeping bag
duvet
fleece throw

they will be sleeping in:
cotton pjs
fleece pjs (with feet)
possibly hats
possibly fleece poncho over the top

(this is an amazed face) at how you fit all that into the car!

Have you thought of getting a thicker/warmer sleeping bag and saving a bit of space on all the supplementary duvets and blankets?

(wonders how I have camped all these years with only a sleeping bag and foam mat when I even get cold at home in the proper bed?)

That list would be very effective but perhaps a bit overkill??!!

The last time we camped with DD (2.2 at the time) it was September and around 8 degrees in the tent at night (was anal 1st time mum with thermometer ), so colder outside, and she just had:

  • SIG (didn't have footprint groundsheet but would recommend one, if only to make it easier to pack tent away dry)
  • Thermal mat
  • Readybed (airbed)
  • The v thin duvet attached to the readybed
  • Fleece blanket over the top mainly to stop her rolling out

She wore - vest, brushed cotton PJs, fleece all-in-one, 2.5tog Grobag.

That was it, and she was as warm as toast - probably too warm as cheeks were v rosy.

If we go at Easter she'll have thermal mat, airbed, small fleece blanket to cover the airbed, Vango child's sleeping bag, maybe another fleece over the top - then PJs and fleece all-in-one again

we take a fan heater (electric hook up) and pump the tent full of lovely hot air before we get undressed for bed! lovely! (doesnt last long though!)
