We;ve just got a tent and are planning our first trip probably may time. DS will just be 3. thought abouut buying a ready bed (so that he can't role out) and putting on extra blankets if the intregral duvet isn't warm enough. is this a good or bad idea?

thanks

Ready bed with extra duvet sounds good, because they are contained. I would definitely aim for quite a bit of extra warmth, because the integral duvet is quite thin.

Personally I seem to end up on the floor while they sleep between dh and I on the airbed!

choufleur · 23/02/2009 19:30

i'm already working on the assumption that ds and me will sleep together and dh will be in the other sleeping bit. we've got two single air beds rather than a double for that eventually.

My 3yr old ds had a ready bed last year and probably will this year too. We just put extra fleece blankets on him and he's got a sleeping bag too this year so will use that and extra blankets

DD has a readybed and blanket, and she sleeps in fleecy PJs. What's as important as the covers is insulating the ground as the cold comes up from there. I put down a roll mat and then a blanket, then the ready bed.

bigTillyMint · 23/02/2009 19:34

PJ's!

In a sleeping bag with a blankie on top, on a self-inflating mat.

Friends DC used to sleep in ready beds.

FeelingOld · 23/02/2009 20:11

As already said on here, its as important what is under you as what is on top if you.

We put and extra ground sheet down under the bedrooms, then there is the bedroom pod ground sheet, then we put down one of those shiny survival type blankets (like the ones they put round runners after running a marathon) then we put a blanket down then the kids sleep on a camp bed in a sleeping bag with a fleece blanket on top. Its amazing how much warmer it makes you with insulation under you.

duckyfuzz · 23/02/2009 20:16

our twins used ready beds when they were 3, with sleeping bags too, rugs/blanket underneath for when they rolled out, which they did, frequently...now they're 5 and we all sleep on thermarest type matresses in a row, its much easier (and warmer)!

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 23/02/2009 20:25

A ready bed for our ds1 aswell. He wears a fleecy all in one suit and sleeps inside a sleeping bag like this under the thin integral duvet. If it's a chilly night I put a fleecy blanket over him when I go to bed too!

nannyL · 24/02/2009 12:15

agree

have a foam mat and a blanket under the ready bed as well as extra blankets etc

troutpout · 25/02/2009 14:07

mummy vango adult sleeping bags (much warmer than most of the kids ones). Dd has been sleeping in it since she was 18 months old. I just tied string half way along it to close the bottom half off.

bumpybecky · 25/02/2009 14:12

we've got some fleece snuggle sacks, and the kids use those inside a normal (cheapy!)sleeping bag

I think the snuggle sacks were from Dunelm, Grandma bought them

a friend dresses her kid in their pe kit tracksuits for bed when camping rather than pjs as they're warmer, might try that next time

Had a couple of Kampa beds which were great, until my parents visited us during a camping trip. My dad is no lightweight and lay across both beds when playing with my dds'. End result, 2 burst beds and an uncomfortable nights sleep for all of us.

Now use ordinary inflatable bed for dd1 and ready bed for dd2. Have beds on mats and they wear pj's, fleece/fleecy sleep suit, sleeping bags with extra blanket tucked right round them and bed!

amazonianwoman · 26/02/2009 14:19

Cali - those Kampa beds look good - did you have the junior ones with raised sides? Thinking that could be the solution for DS (2 next month) to stop him rolling.

If you did have junior ones, what age do you think they'd last til?

usernametaken · 26/02/2009 14:48

DD sleeps in a ready bed with her pjs on and a fleece suit (all in one) plus a few fleece blankets. We got her fleece suit in Mothercare.

cali · 26/02/2009 22:39

We did have the Kampa junior beds, with the raised sides and they were great until my dad burst them!

I think they are meant to last until they are about 5/6 years.

Tempted to buy a couple more and ban my parents from visiting us when we are away camping!!

amazonianwoman · 26/02/2009 22:48

Excellent thanks. It sounds like the perfect solution for DS. Do you think they are better than ready beds?

We have a My First ready bed but DD rolled out of that easily and outgrew it by 3. We also have a junior ready bed but it's always deflating even though we can't find a puncture.

cali · 27/02/2009 14:46

We reverted back to using a "my first ready bed" for dd2 (aged 1) and had her in a sleeping bag and a fleecy blanket tucked underneath right round her and underneath the bed, this seemed to keep her warm and in one place.

For dd2, we bought a single airbed and did the same thing with a large fleecy blanket.

Having 2 kampa beds did take up a lot of space in our tent (montana 6) as with the sides, they are a lot wider than conventional air beds!

We also had a bit of a problem with our 1st kampa bed leaking, even before my dad lay across it, they are supposedly leak free but we would always have to pump it up before dd1 went to bed, got it replaced and didn't have the same issue.

mumshadenough · 01/03/2009 13:07

My 2 (3 & 6) sleep on proper camp beds like these with a self inflating mat on top to retain heat. They have their home duvets on and they have never been cold! Had to stop using air beds as they kept rolling off, and they have never fallen off the camp bed as it dips in the middle.

The beds when collapsed dont take up much room and the self inlfating mats are really small too as I got arics

Might be worth consdering.

Pixel · 01/03/2009 18:08

I thought about getting proper camp beds but do they stay up ok? I remember camping as a child and my dad taking the rear seats out of the car for my sis and I to sleep on, as we were on a slight hill and the campbeds kept folding up in the night!

At the moment my dcs have readybeds, with a fleecy liner and a fleece blanket underneath as well. They wear their normal pjs but they keep their t-shirts on underneath for an extra layer, plus their socks. Some people have said they use hats too but tbh they snuggle right down in the beds anyway so I don't think they need them.

mumshadenough · 01/03/2009 23:04

These ones have 4 legs and once in place the tension keeps them up no problem....We also sleep on the concertina ones with a double air bed on top!

babycino · 02/03/2009 20:03

my ds last year had double airbed to himself! as kept rolling off a single one and hated being trapped in the fleece of the ready bed.. and rolled off if just on top. I put cheap double sleeping bag underneath him and he wears a set of thermals (leggings and l/sleeve top) under pajamas and thick socks. in sleeping bag with a couple of extra fleece blankets. He is really wriggly though! the thermals seem to make a real difference...as he didn't wake once on last trip for being cold although had got out of most of the blankets! I've already bought this years set in anticipation...
