Dh wants to camp this summer, I'm not sure. Can you please convince me that it is fun?

Dh wants us to go camping with some friends this summer. Our DCs will be just turned 2 and 3.8. The friends' DCs are similar ages.

I camped loads as a young adult, around India, the middle east, North Africa, Asia, etc so I'm not a camping-virgin but I'm worried how it'll be with the DCs. What worries me most is:

  • what happens if it pees down with rain all week?
  • do most campsites now have clean loo blocks, hot water, etc?
  • will the DCs be bored or will they love every minute? My DD is not very out-doorsy, but DS loves being out all the time

I would like to give it a go - can anyone give me their experience and persuade me that it will be fun? Thanks a million

I was just coming on here to post about our 2 dses (will be 4 and 2) and here is this thread! So, now my question (if I can be so bold as to stage a mini-hijack) is: how early in the year is too early for camping with young'uns?

I really want to go to Wales at Easter --is this madness?

rookiemater · 21/02/2009 21:55

All depends on the campsite. Make sure you have a proper one with running water, toilets and showers. Oh and agree go for a long weekend rather than a full week to start off with. Or preferably go to a nice cottage with toilet, shower, kitchen and comfy bed instead. Sorry, am not good camper, have tried best to enjoy it, but its just not me.

Wales at Easter?

Well we are in wales and I would say it depends on your kit,the campsite and where.

I wouldn't toucj the extremes, coastal regions at Easter. Quite often its warm but you do want inland, you do want a site where you can alldash in for a cooked brekkie and you do want good sleeping bags, wollies for night etc (if we go in April the kids wear woolie hats to bed and you do need that).

But I revised for my Uni 2nd yar exams in a windy site in Cheddar in April and we had a lovely time with the boys running around and Dh and I reading.

Thanks Peachy.

Am also considering somewhere in the midlands, or anywhere where it might possibly be a bit warmer, really. Any suggestions gratefully received!

I would second or is that third fleet at weymouth, fab shower block , great views and walking.

TheyCallMePeachy · 22/02/2009 16:24

Where are you based?

Have already suggested it today LOLbut broadway house in cheddar is good- straight down the motorway, plenty to see and if it is rainy or coldyou can get a meal / get dry without the cfacillities being anywhere near your tent,we rate it

Anyone who fancies Dorset, I can really recommend Ulwell Cottage site near Swanage (shop, pool, massive field with some swings etc for kids to race around on, cleanest site I've ever been on) but it's quite pricey! Loads to do in the area.

oregonianabroad · 22/02/2009 19:18

We're in the NE. And sorry for the hijack, but all suggestions very helpful, thank you!
