Looking to expand from the staple of the North Norfolk coast, and the kids would love going on the ferry, any suggestions?

Just going to bed now,so I'll come back tomorrow, but yes! We love the Isle of Wight.

Anywhere in particular you want to go? Anything you want to be near? How old are DCs?

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 17/02/2009 09:12

Dc's are 1 and 4, I've only been once when I was a teenager, and that was to stay in a b and b in Shanklin, so I don't really know it well at all. Am open to suggestions from someone who knows it better.

We like Park Resorts at Shanklin (Lower Hyde) off season (although we'll have to go in the school summer holidays if we go again and I'm really not sure about that!)

It's got a lovely little indoor swimming pool (as well as an outdoor one, but I'm not that brave in the UK), a playground, and the campsite is on level ground away from the statics (and I think they've had a new toilet block since we went). It's a short walk from the shops at Shanklin (in particular a Somerfields supermarket) and the Dr's (dd2 had extremely bad nappy rash last time we were there and we ended up seeing a Dr!). The beach is probably too far to walk, but there's a little sand train or you can park down on the road next to the beach. I think there's a soft play centre on the seafront too. Newport (the main town) is only a short drive, and there's the usual range of shops (including an ELC which can while away an hour or so if it's raining!) There's also a big cinema in Newport.

We like Shanklin, but we're thinking about trying Ryde next time we go - Ryde is a different character to Shanklin or Sandown, Ryde has a long flat seafront with boating lakes, fair and a swimming pool etc, where as Shanklin and Sandown are more cliffy, with the towns on top of the cliffs and the beaches below.

It's a lovely place to go, it's got all the home comforts you need (like familiar supermarkets (Sainsbury's, Tesco, Somerfield, Morrisons etc) for particular nappies etc!) but feels like you're going abroad as you go on the ferry!

Red Funnel do a special offer where you can go for so many nights out of school hols and book an all inclusive package with campsite and ferry.

Let me know if you want to know anything else, hope I've not confused you too much!

Oh, and let me know if the Park Resorts thing isn't you, we've been to a few ordinary sites as well, I just personally prefer sites like that if you can go out of school holidays as things like the swimming pool are included.

WTWTW
park resorts
I have been to thorness and lower hyde which are both nice if thats the type of site you like (Big fish, little fish card board box).
personally if i went again i think i would go to a smaller site with good play facilities as it was wasted on us, we prefer to go out and about more.

One year we stayed in weymouth & went to guernsey for a day on the ferry that was fun.
We went all round the island on the bus for 50p,played in the park by the swimming pool and wandered through their unusual high street.
hope this helps

Avoid thorness if they still havent got a new toilet block.
They have been planning new toilets for at least 3 years that i know of. I didn't find the porta cabins to be very suitable.
I see the web site says subject to planning permission.
The pitches weren't the flattest either, i needed 4 blocks on the rear legs.

We loveaprkresorts nodes point- right on a littlecove, nice independent restaurant (evenings better) on the beach, etc. DOnt do the entertainment side much, but they are nicely located and helpful- unlike Haven who refused us a pitch,PR offered to find us a large one for no surcharge so we could take a large enough tent for our sn boys, another site in their group also had their cuddly character blokevisit ds2 who was obsessed with him at the time and having a rough time coping with his brothers.

Can't sing their praises highly enough

spicemonster · 17/02/2009 20:19

We stayed in a National Trust campsite near Newport which was fab. It is pretty basic though so depends what you like. Right opposite the beach though

We stay at park resorts thorness bay but in a static caravan with the dd's (3 and 5 years old), we enjoy it but we go before the summer holidays so its not too busy.

waverley this looks nice

Washersaurus · 17/02/2009 20:41

Oooh we are looking at the Isle of Wight too - am watching this thread with interest.

Washersaurus · 18/02/2009 21:44

We are currently looking at this deal Red Funnel if that helps?

kidsrus · 19/02/2009 22:38

im feeling like going again now this year is there any other sites around with a pool, play area, and good facilities that isn't owned by big company's?

Washersaurus · 19/02/2009 23:11

Well, we booked a week here - The Orchards at the end of June for £108 including ferry. That is an independant site - I can't wait! Am now planning our other camping trips for April/May

Milliways · 22/02/2009 21:02

Carpenter's Farm??

nikkid21 · 24/02/2009 15:37

Whitecliffe bay is a nice site with indoor pool and ballpit if the weather is rubbish. They do good special offers with the ferry included.

mosschops30 · 24/02/2009 15:40

We went to one of the Park Resorts one in high season and I have vowed never to go camping ever again.
What a disgusting, smelly, minging dump, it was everything I imagined camping would be and despised it!

However we loved our time in the IOW, something to do, all day every day and great for the kids (who are 12 and 4 so difficult to please together)

mosschops30 · 24/02/2009 15:41

Looking at the map I think it was Nodes Point
