we are going to the camping show at the nec on tuesday and buying a new tent. having set my heart on a wolf lake 7 i was talking to a friend of a friend today who has an outwell tunnel tent (it's a polyester one tho, not sure of the name, but a 12 berth one) she said when the wind was bad last year the whole tent was rocking in the wind!! She seemed to think this was a problem with tunnel tents....

so is this the same for the polycotton ones? she said it was awful and made her feel really sea sick, which has put me off a bit. can anyone reassure me/confirm my fears?!

I have an Outwell tunnel tent (think its a Montana). Its very sturdy. One very stormy night on a coastal site on the Gower loads of other tents had snapped poles, etc and ours was fine. If you're in an exposed site you should pitch so that the short end is into the wind. We pitch the back end to the direction of the cliff on a coastal site as back end slopes more as well. If you pitch side on then it could be more of a problem.

Although to be honest I think any tent will rock in bad winds. Its when they collapse you need to worry.

God no - ours is a solid as a rock. Mind you it does weigh about 50kg all in so it shouldn't lift in the wind, but we had loads of compliments last Whit in Devon about how sturdy she is (we have a Lakey btw) They also have a heavy duty PVC groundsheet which helps. She is on my profile - the greenish tent.

Be warned though - once you go inside one you'll love it so be prepared to start searching for the best price

perhaps this friend of a friend didn't peg it outproperly or use the guys? my dh is a pegging fanatic

We have an outwell indiana 8 and last year in the bad winds and rain ours was quite good and faired much better than most of the 'pod' type tents. The poles on ours are quite heavy and sturdy not the bendy type so that helps.

my friend has an outwell winfield;
a tunnel tent from about 4 years ago

it is secured with rock pegs and metal delta pegs for the guys

it has been well used and been used in some very windy conditions, and has not had a problem with the wind

i think you need to be sure you attach them properly by spneding a lot of money on good tent pegs

thanks, that has reassured me a bit! maybe she didn't peg it down right or maybe it was just because it's HUGE!

i still have my heart set on wolf lake, best price i can find on line is 745, but want to wait until tommorrow so i can have a walk inside it etc and see the famous curtains plus you never know they might have a good offer on at the show...

if anyone sees them cheap anywhere let me know

We have the Bear Lake 6 - and it's really solid. Brilliant tent.

Hi, we have an outwell indiana - 4 man tunnel tent, and we love it. Trust it completely. Have been on very windy sites and seen other tents collapse and we've always remained upright. I do think though that it's a lot to do with how well it's pegged down (husband is tent putting up expert!!)

However Outwell Bear Lake? I can dream... maybe one day when we have the right amount of children to justify it!!

We have an Outwell Montana, and it's very solid in the wind, we were in an awful storm last year and it was fine, I have been in a tunnel tent with those 'flexi' poles and that was dancing all over the place in not much more than a breeze!
