If you camp/van - tell me about your portable pizza oven

I’m thinking we could make the dough in advance.
we have a Campervan with a semi open awning so would it bring some heat to the awning too?

we make a beer dough and it usually just needs an afternoon proving in the heat of our tent awning to be good

Twoshoesnewshoes · 24/03/2026 17:25

Oooh a beer dough!
do you have a pizza oven?
which one?

I have a cadac with a pizza stone, which works really well. I make dough at home, freeze it, then just leave it out in a covered bowl to defrost and prove.

MrsMattSantos · 24/03/2026 18:26

we have an ooni pizza oven, which uses wood chips so is ideal for taking camping
having home made pizzas while out in the wilds is fab!

ImWearingPantaloons · 24/03/2026 18:31

We use a Cobb oven which comes with a pizza stone, and what they call a frying pan which also works well for dough.

EasterlyDirection · 24/03/2026 18:36

We have a wood Ooni, I wouldn't use it under an awning, the chimney is quite tall (assuming you use it on a table which you have to do really) and they throw out a lot of heat also smoke especially while heating up.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 24/03/2026 18:57

I was thinking that the chimney bit could go outside the awning and the oven front inside?

EasterlyDirection · 24/03/2026 19:01

The chimney on ours is at the oven opening end.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 24/03/2026 19:03

Ahh okay
i was looking at the long thin ones, I’ll see if I can find a link

Oh hang on the chimney is at the oven end on that one!

I don't have a camper van but have cooked a lot of pizza both indoor in a commercial pizza oven and outdoor on an Ooni
I wouldn't even consider 'bringing heat to the awning' - it will disappear fast anyway, and be an extra danger.

Would definitely bring along a pizza oven if/when we get a camper van. But I'd keep it at a safe distance from any awning.

MrsMattSantos · 24/03/2026 19:55

also stressing our ooni is used totally outside of the awning - they do heat up a fair bit.

T6 here.

A couple of slices at a time, in the ridgemonkey.

On the normal stove. Divine.

EasterlyDirection · 24/03/2026 22:39

I think the chimney has to be at the opening end to draw the flames and hot air from the fire at the back over the pizza, that's how it cooks it evenly.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 25/03/2026 09:07

@EasterlyDirection that makes sense, thank you
we always have the barbecue under the awning - it’s one like an event shelter not a tent iyswim
are the ovens lots hotter than a barbecue?
I think we’ll get one - we like having our special vanning foods. Our other one is American style pancakes, I mix the flour etc at home and bring it in a shaker.

We used a pizza stone inside a BBQ, saves having 2 devices and works really well.

DanaScullysLegoHair · 25/03/2026 09:18

We have a wood fired Ooni that I personally wouldn't want to use anywhere near a tent or awning, even a fairly open one.

You can get a gas powered Ooni which might work better? It would be a lot faster and less cleaning hassle too?

Twoshoesnewshoes · 25/03/2026 10:32

Maybe I’ll try the pizza stone idea

This. I make calzone in my ridgemonkey. I can pre-make most of it, including dough. I do cheat at times with pre-made dough.

EasterlyDirection · 25/03/2026 11:26

I think they probably are hotter than a BBQ, you have to be very careful to avoid touching anything except the handles and it stays very hot for hours because of the stone, but also the chimney funnels all the smoke and heat up into one direct spot which really would be dangerous under an awning.
