Would there be any interest in Fresh Food Boxes at campsites?

Hi All, I am a mum with a nearly 10yr old son and we camp alot but I get so frustrated having to spend so much going out for food or wasting alot of food that we bring with us so we came up with the idea of providing fresh food boxes i.e Fresh Burger, Breakfast and BBQ boxes. (The 3 B's!) They would contain all you need with no waste(obvs all eco friendly packaging!). Would really appreciate some feedback on this idea -would you buy one and if not why? If you would -also why?-very interested in peoples thoughts !!Note : it would be quality and fresh so not as cheap as going to Aldi to get all the ingredients :-)
I am based in Cornwall so would obviously start here!

I'd probably be interested if there was enough flexibility in amounts of food etc.

iSage · 29/11/2025 17:57

I probably wouldn't, to be honest, although don't take my view as representative. I like to eat out when I'm camping/caravanning and to spend minimal time cooking, so when we don't eat out we just open tins and that sort of thing. I don't think it's a bad idea as you see a lot of health conscious types camping, with bikes and so on, but I'm not one of them, at least not when I'm on holiday!

Lucky you living in Cornwall - my favourite place to camp!

Good luck if you go ahead with this.

Thank you for your feedback and I do agree I love eating out too but I also love cooking onsite especially breakfast so I would love not to have to bring all of the ingredients with us( I always forget something, esp the eggs!!)
Yes very blessed to live here-best move we ever made!!
Happy Camping and thanks again for the feedback - I'm still 50/50 as to whether to try start this up and so is the poll I created ..its at 50/50 :-)

When we're on holiday we like to shop local for our BBQ but tend to just pop to the farm shop to pick up supplies. They do meat packs and then you just grab salad bits and rolls. What would you be offering that's different?

Hi - yes good point - I guess I would be offering convenience and premium local produce with potentially less waste(obvioulsy depends on size of the group). I often forget condiments so I would include those. Not trying to replace the farm shop meat packs just offer an alternative to include everything you need in one box. Appreciate the feedback - thank you!

I think it would be a very seasonal business, wouldn't it?

TheDandyLion · 29/11/2025 18:40

Most campsites located on or very near to farms will have their own produce. Bigger sites like camping and caravan type sites will allow Tesco deliveries.

Alot of the campsites here have year round holiday homes/sited caravans/log cabins so yes it would mostly summer but could trickle year round if it was tasty :-) And i could look at getting into Retail shops if it was successful.

It’s an interesting idea, have you spoken to any campsite owners? I think your target market is people glamping. Staying in yurts or similar. I think regular tenting folk are probably on a bit of a budget and you’re going to need to charge a fair bit to make any money from this. Once you factor in time to take orders and make deliveries etc.

Will you just offer this out in your local area? Will you set up a web shop for orders?

Will you deliver to reception and leave with the campsite owners? Is there anything in it for them? What’s to stop them seeing what you’re doing and undercut you? It would be easy for the campsite to market this direct to their campers and cut you out.

Traveling around Cornwall in the height of summer can be a ballache. I guess you’d be driving around at the crack of dawn so you can deliver in time for breakfast. How many sites could you get around before say 8:30?

DarkForces · 29/11/2025 18:50

A lot of sites we stay at already offer a similar service eg https://www.awayresorts.co.uk/discover/grocery-packs/. I never use it as it always includes things I won't use and I would rather pick my own plus it's not cheap. It is convenient as it's in the caravan when you arrive.

Grocery Packs at Away Resorts

Exclusive to Away Resorts, explore our range of grocery packs ready to collect when you arrive. Simply choose your pack and we’ll do the rest.

Hi - thank you for your reply. No I havent spoken to any campsite owners yet as I guess Im trying to see if there is a market for it at all. I would be looking to sell directly through the larger campsites(offer a cut to them obvs) not delivery. but yes maybe I could start with smaller glamping sites first and test it out.

How would campsites store the food and keep it fresh before collection? What do you mean you wouldn't deliver? Would you expect them to come to you, collect it, store it, deal with the customer service aspect for a small cut? Feels like they may as well do it all themselves and cut you out completely

Hi-Yes Ive seen these and have ordered them once or twice myself but I wouldnt again. So for my Burger Box - it would contain local bakery buns, fresh premium burgers, tasty sauces, maybe some local cheese etc in a box in the Campsite shop. Maybe I am a marketers dream but if I saw everything ready in a box I'd pick it up! :-)

Sorry, I maybe wasnt too clear in how I was hoping to sell.I would deliver it to the shop -effectively they would buy it off me and sell it or take a slice of profits like anything else they sell.

But surely the shops would already sell the same stuff you would? People would be paying a premium for you to pre bag it? Would that mean bread would be in the fridge so you'd end up with hard premium rolls as meat has to stay cold? Plus you'd be using up precious fridge space on items that don't need to be there. I can't see how this would work at all.

They sell Food but not the same as what I would be proposing. It is an alternative to what they sell and I think choice is a good thing. I also feel like there is a 'space' between normal Tesco food and burgers that cost 12quid each in the take away(yes i know its cooked for them!).

I'm not sure that this would ever be financially viable, you'd either have to sell huge volume or have a huge markup.

DarkForces · 29/11/2025 19:35

Ok. You need to speak to some actual business owners. Every inch of their shop will be priced per metre and that's the profit it'll be expected to drive. The fridge will be a premium as it costs more to run. They will need your produce to generate the same profit as they get from the things they get from wholesalers, I can't get my head around how this will work. You can't put bread in the fridge but if you don't pre bag you lose your whole usp. I'm sorry to be a downer but my family has run businesses and it's about maximising your profit from every inch. They'll know their market for more specific advice but if they thought premium burgers would be a good option they'd just by then direct ac they'd get them cheaper that way than from you.

There wouldnt be a huge mark up but with circa 200 campsites in Cornwall alone I'd try to go for quantity so thats why I was hoping for some feedback on whether people would be interested in it.

I’ve always enjoyed shopping locally when camping. It supports the local community. So it’s a no from me.

Appreciate your feedback and yes I will discuss further -it may not be viable for me to do but I personally would love a convenient, quality (not takeaway or Tesco) option while camping! Maybe thats just me !
