I need to by a new tent!

I'm newly single and i am determined to take the kids camping this summer. There will be me and 3 dcs, the 8 year old will help me pitch it (i hope!).

So what should i get? not too big and not too expensive!, also, Where is the best place to get one?

H used to sort all this sort of stuff out but i can't ask him now so please help

ooh good question - bumping for you as I'd like the answer too!!

Lucycat · 07/06/2008 21:07

You'll have to excsue the tryping as I've nahd a few gleasses of wine - but first how many bedrrooms dod you need?

Have alook here and see if anything takes your fancy

Tunnel tents are easier than domes to put up with one chikd as helper, i'd try and get to see a few 'erected' if possible, if not then get yourself onto uk campsite to look for advice too.

You can do it though - congrats on the newly single, you'll find lots of support here in the Camping threads - we're a very friendly bunch.

if a bit drunk...

ambercat · 07/06/2008 21:16

Thanks, guess i would want 2 bedrooms.

Will have a look at your links, might join you with some wine aswell, you've reminded me of the bottle i have lurking in the fridge!!

Hi

I went camping on my own with ds's last year, aged 5 and 3 - it was my first time camping at all and I borrowed a friend's Khyam rigi-dome - it was brilliant.

I'd had one practice in her garden, with her help, so at the campsite was the first time I'd actually done it on my own and it took me about 30 minutes - I was impressed!

The main poles are all built into the tent so all you do is unfold it and click them all into place. It was HUGE - room to stand in the main area and two bedrooms.

Would highly recommend them and I'm hoping to get my own this year

Hello dooty!

not raining in old=e Stockie this evening! are you going camping again this summer?

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 07/06/2008 21:28

I have a 5 person Outwell tunnel tent that I can pitch on my own.

Dottydot · 07/06/2008 21:30

Hello Lucycat! Well, I'm really hoping we'll have enough money to buy the wondrous Khyam, but we've just moved house (finally!!!) and having to spend every penny on building work for the heap of rubble wonderful house we've just bought...

ambercat · 07/06/2008 21:30

Thanks dottydot, really worried about making s fool of myself on the campsite! My garden is'nt big enough to practise at home, i'm trying to think of friends with land!!

How did you find camping on your own with children? I'm a bit worried but really don't want them to miss out because their father is an arse!

I am a newby to camping and bought an Outwell Nevada L the other day. I put it up in the garden in 20 minutes on my own - so it must be easy
Haven't used it properly yet - but can't wait!!
(best price I found was £210)

Dottydot · 07/06/2008 21:38

To be honest, it was utterly exhausting - but I'd do it again! ds's loved it - I just found it tiring 'cos I had to do everything myself and not send dp (who works weekends so couldn't come) off to do the washing up/playing frisbee etc. etc..!

If I manage to get my hands on a tent I think I'll go with the friend whose tent I borrowed last year and her 2 ds's and we're lucky that if we ever move into our pile of rubble house, the garden will be big enough to camp in!

Lucycat · 07/06/2008 21:39

ooh how exciting on the house front - I didn't know you'd moved?! still on your side of the A6 for ds's school?

Dottydot · 07/06/2008 21:43

Yes - Brackley - we're bringing the house prices down by having a carport built

Lucycat · 07/06/2008 21:44

lol

BlueDragonfly · 07/06/2008 21:46

where have u moved to dotty? am also in sport. altho not the drunken part

ambercat · 07/06/2008 21:47

Does sound knackering but fun! really want to do this.

Once i get a tent i'll start looking for local campsites and just do a weekend close to home in case it all goes horribly wrong!

Hi - I'm in heaton chapel - just off Manchester Road. Bought our house 3 months ago and it needed major structural work and is currently just bricks and floorboards. Started cleaning it today - nightmare..!

Anyway, sorry for hijacking thread

Dottydot · 07/06/2008 21:48

Ambercat - go for it! I felt so proud when i came home last year having spent 2 nights in the great outdoors on my own with ds's. I even cooked on my little one ring gas burner!

OverMyDeadBody · 07/06/2008 21:48

How about one of those pop-up tents? They look very cool

BlueDragonfly · 07/06/2008 21:48

to answer your OP (ish) i asked the man in millets (DS1 calls him Millets man!) which was easier to pitch on my own out of a tunnel tent and the one we eventually chose (which is probably a dome) and he said that tunnel tents catch the wind so if its windy and you are pitching alone it will take forever where as with the one we picked its pretty much just 2 main poles and pegging

BlueDragonfly · 07/06/2008 21:49

i am t'other end of the A6 Dotty - HG

shall i start a summer meet up thread?

Dottydot · 07/06/2008 21:50

go on then - why not..!

Lucycat · 07/06/2008 21:51

oy mom! I heard that!

I've had many drunken nights in The Bamboo

BlueDragonfly · 07/06/2008 21:54

i have never been in there lucycat!

will start a thread...hang on

sorry for the hijack amber. I did get some very good advice from the millets man. i haven't camped yet though so you may want to discount what i said!!
