Hi
Could anyone recognise a decent campsite in west scotland? Wish list includes, near a beach (fewer midges) with a shop and a cleanish toilets. we are novice campers and I am yet to be convinced so any ideas would be gratefully received!

Any idea where on the west coast? Its a big coastline

Scramble · 07/06/2008 23:52

My PIL favourite is New England Bay which is south of Stranraer. Its right on the beach, in fact I think the tents get the front row. Has a small shop and a games hut room, play park and two immaculate toilet blocks.

Bugger just looked up its website and it no longer takes tents, sorry.

I know another couple in Ayrshire.

I haven't stayed at this one CULZEAN. But I know its location, its not right on the beach but its set in woodland and fields. Don't think it has much of a shop but only 10 mins from maybole which has a small supermarket. Access to NTS Culzean Castle grounds.

how far north are you prepared to go? sands holiday park in gairloch is just gorgeous

Scramble · 08/06/2008 00:17

My DS has stayed at Sealshore and totaly loved it, he is desperate for us to take the camper van there, the only thing that puts me off is the ferry prices.

vitomum · 08/06/2008 00:20

FOR a 1st time camping experience arran would be a great choice.

gigglewitch · 08/06/2008 01:08

we've just got back from here.
and you are gonna have to take bug-spray and citronella candles regardless because the bugs - which DD (2yo) called Pidges will bite you. sorry - but best off forewarned eh? As my mum wisely told us - sun down, zip up [as in tent]

nicky111 · 08/06/2008 11:50

these sound great, a friend recently went camping on Arran and loved it too despite torrential downpours everyday! We live in Glasgow so are looking for anywhere a few hours drive away. There seems to be so much choice and as I am a Londoner, and don't know the area at all, it is difficult to make a decision. And yes gigglewitch, I guess the midges are inevitable. Best pack the travel scrabble (and hungry hippos) for evening time.

Fantastic place to go, but whatever you do, don't forget the mozzie killer, because even at the beach they can be bad

Arran is fantastic

And if it 'persists down' they have an indoor pool that you can pay to use!

Blandmum · 08/06/2008 12:13

Justjules, did you eat at the Kilberry inn??? we did and they were fantastic with the kids. Wonderful dinner. The views of Jura are just astonishing from there.

Blandmum · 08/06/2008 12:16

If you fancy staying in a cottage, rather than camping I can recomend the Estate at skipness, near Tarbet. Real famous 5 stuff as we were staying right next door to the castle!!!

they do fabbo seafood too!

[sigh] we used to like there. In St Andrews and it was fab. MIL still lives in Edinburgh and loads of dh's family live in Ayr.

Last year we spent 4 weeks and went to Ayr -> Arran -> skipness and the kyntyre peninsula -> Drumnadrochet and the loch ness area -> Avemore -> Edinburgh. It was one of the best holidays ever

Blandmum · 08/06/2008 12:21

Live there. not like. But Obviously I like V much too

Where?? we were on the Rothiemerchus estate and it was so great.

Are you staying there for your honeymoon?

If so I can recommend the most luxurious B and B that I have ever stayed in in my life!

It even came with wee decanters of booze in the bedrooms
