Camping in Scotland - how bad are the midges really?!

Thinking of doing a bit of a Scottish trip in the Summer, maybe 2-3 different locations, camping.
But then I remembered about midges….
I have been to Scotland in the summer before but never camping so could avoid the worst of the midges.
Is camping in western Scotland/Highlands in August a terrible idea?

Midges/mosquitoes like biting me and I do react to the bites.

@user2848502016 It's prime midgey season in Summer and they will be awful in rural and island areas. Not just swarms of them - you'll have horse flies and mosquitoes as well.

If you persist in going, take mosquito nets, anti histamines and full body coverings. It's worth investing in those hats with netting as well so you can walk around and not get bitten.

Don't be tempted to leave windows open or tent flaps open. Sleep inside the netting. Netting = best friend.

It's not a question of if you will get bit, it's how badly and how often.

I stayed in the Tyndrum WigWam camp ground in West Highland Way and it was 100% stunning BUT left the window open and woke up more bite than person... They're even in the showers.

Good luck!
