Camping on the Gower

I remember a very happy holiday on the Gower as a child & would like to return. Has anyone been recently? Any good campsite recommendations? We usually go for smaller more basic ones.

Usually 2, have done 1 but we've never stayed at type 3 - would be prepared to try if recommendation was very high & location good, but we wouldn't use EHU.

o you know any campsites on the Gower Sally?

We stayed at Pitton Cross last year. It was lovely and flat. It did rain horizontally for a few days so lots of folk had cancelled. Consequently, it wasn't too packed. The facilities were fine (free hot water always available, washing up room, laundry, shop). It was quiet which was the most important thing for us. Everyone stuck to the no noise after 10pm rule.

Can't remember the campsite name but the one behind Rhossili beach is fantastic (as is the beach, which I have probably spelt entirely incorrectly).

Thanks all - I'll look into both of those. Actually I think we stayed near Rhossili beach when I was a child, so that might win on nostalgic grounds.

I like Nicholaston Farm.
they have big fridges for your fridge stuff, nice shop with basics as well as coffee shop type stuff, pick your own fruit, very clean loos and showers.
and by far the best bit......
a walk through woods and over dunes to the most fantastic beach ( at the end of Oxwich bay). It is about a 20 minuet treck down and 30 minute cklimb back but very worth it. couildn't do it with a buggy though.

OK here goes:-

Hillend - bigger, shop, cafe with great views (great for when it rains) playground, loos, showers and washing up, right next to a huge beach, family fields (but stay away from the pitches on the dividing hedge, can get busy, cannot book.

Beynons at Nicholston - not been there yet but friends did last week and loved it - right next to strawberry picking farm and famouns five style walk to the beach as mentioned above.

Three Cliffs - small usually busy as it was voted runner up in the Best view of Britain.

There are so many. Have you checked them out on UKcampsite.co.uk?

We stayed at Pitton Cross too for a long weekend last year and It was fab......but the weather was really good and that always helps.

saggyhairyarse · 09/06/2008 19:55

We stayed at Oxwich Campsite and it was basic but lovely. There is a pool but when we were there no play park, and Oxwich Bay is just at the end of the lane.

Thanks all. I've looked at all of them now & have a hankering for Hillside as I reckon that's where I stayed back in the late 60's. But, you can't book - what are the chances of getting on the site on a Sunday in August - anyone know - am I mad to try; is it totally weather dependent; or will there be plenty of people leaving after the weekend?

It does get busy and def very weather dependent as it is right behind the dunes. I'll check with a friend who camps out for the summer there and get back to you when I can. You could always put a deposit dow elsewhere as a back up (so long as you factor the lost deposit into your holiday budget!)

snorkle · 22/06/2008 23:10

Thanks Billster, It would be useful to know what sort of time we'd need to arrive and the chances of getting on as well if you do get to speak to your friend.

Lots of local people go down for the weekend as it's easy though you feel you're miles away so if you can get down there before the after school/after work rush ie about 1300/1400 then you may fare better.

You could always email the campsite and ask them for some tips.

If I speak to my friend I'll ask her and post back.
