Just bought our own tent and we're hoping to go away at the start of July for a week (after a very soggy but still massively enjoyable test trip over the bank holiday!)
I really have no idea about where to go and know nothing about what makes a good campsite. Sooooo, what are your favourite campsites from pretty much anywhere? We're in the West Midlands but don't mind travelling

we are v new at this. stayed in others; camps twicew and now we have our own. ones in aberdovey nice. am told rosilly and gowan peninsula nice (excuse spelling). great if you can to go with others as kiddies love it. but fine on your own as family. nice if playarea there and near beach. that is all i know!

saggyhairyarse · 02/06/2008 21:32

I really like Durdle Door in Dorset. It is fairly basic, no entertainment though there is a bar and shop and playpark but it is in lovely area and I like camping in the wooded area.

I have jsut come back from Woodlands near Dartmouth. Was very clean and great for the kids as attached to an amusement park if you like that kid of thing. I am more of a rustic camper. It didn't have a playpark in the camping area and the shop shut early/no bar BUT my kids did love it because of the rides etc.

Well Park in Tenby was great. Very flat pitche, clean facilites next to a farm shop for meat and salad for the BBQ.

I am a toilet snob and the best toilets and of course a nice place for me were limefitt in windermere and finlake which was a lovely site in chudleigh devon....... They had hairdryers andit ment the world to me lol!

Fisherground in the Lake District is my favourite campsite ever. In fact, don't go there -- it's too popular for my liking already!

PhDlifeNeedsaNewLife · 02/06/2008 21:35

We liked one at the very end of the Lleyn Peninsula, North Wales. It's pretty rustic but there must've been good loos (not that I remember anything these days) as dh is keen to go back. At sunset we saw the sun sink behind Ireland, it was amazing. Then, of course, there is the whole rest of North Wales, which is even more beautiful.

Nappyzoneneedsanewname · 02/06/2008 21:35

oooo yeah we stayed there - you could have campfires and a little train at the top - toilets were creepy crawly-tastic and there was a nice little pub up the road - up a very dark road!

Hello Honor!

How are you?

We really like this place - recommended by some mumsnetters and lots of others besides. We went last year and are going back again this summer.

We tend to prefer campsites that are quite small and quiet. However, we stayed at this one last week www.breckfarm.co.uk which was 10 acres, but surrounded by woodland and they let you have camp fires. So the first day was mostly spent collecting wood from the woods to build a fire and the children riding their bikes around the site. You don't need to book as it's very big and even during half term wasn't that busy. As it's a working farm it's quite laid back, the showers and toilets are clean but very basic. However, the children had a marvellous time and the surrounding area is great. Don't think it would take you too long from the W Mids. Check out www.ukcampsite.co.uk for more sites.

Hi Cadbury! Long time no x post!

Nappyzone - Finnlake - total blast from the past, I stayed there about 15 years ago and had a whale of a time

MegBusset - I know what you mean about over popular areas, we used to love St Mawes (always in a cottage up till now!) but the last time we went it seemed like everyone on the face of the planet had 'discovered' it. It wasn't quite the same.

Thank you for all of these, I'm off to follow links and google site names and areas.

actually i have just worked out we went in ermmmmmm 1998 lol for a cheap hol the yr before we got married - still it was fab

fatzak · 03/06/2008 18:36

We went to Fisheground for the first time this weekend and it was packed! We thought we had been really clever finding a pitch away from the main family field. What we didn't realise is that every night, between 9-10, all the kids charged around playing war and use the rocks right next to our tent as a look out post It was absolutley manic for an hour but at least totally quiet after 10.30!!

beckynbump · 16/06/2008 21:55

There is a great campsite just by the Youth Hostel in Port Eynon on the Gower. Stones throw from the beach. Great

kiwibella · 16/06/2008 22:35

saggyhairyarse ()... or anyone who may know about the campsite at Durdle Door in Dorset?? Is that the name of the ground? I can only seem to find the area with google. It looks devine.

Lucycat · 16/06/2008 22:43

Here you go - Durdle Door

I remember carrying dd2 up that hill all too well - bloody knackering, but lovely location, the car park for Durdle Door is right next to the campsite and the access lane goes past the tent bit iirc

I'd check out the reviews too.

My favourite site is Dornafield in S devon or Eisteddfa near criccieth on the Lleyn

kiwibella · 16/06/2008 22:56

thanks Lucy - I found it too! I'll check out your links

barnstaple · 16/06/2008 22:58

Gower Peninsula is fantastic - we've been going for 20 years, though the site there has changed and is subject to a few more rules than it was and is more expensive. Still the showers are better than they were 20 years ago too!

Little Roadway Farm in North Devon is lovely, but a bit of a walk to a beach.

Have fun.

kiwibella · 16/06/2008 23:00

I was also looking at Gower... but wondering about the weather? Is it suitable for camping - in a tent??

kiwibella · 16/06/2008 23:03

ooh, just realised the name!! We stayed at Croyde Bay last summer - devine.

ccridersuz · 19/06/2008 18:23

Anglesey, always have good weather, when it's persisting down on the rest of the UK

Whizzz · 19/06/2008 18:30
