so we are back! from our very first camping outing

thank you so much for tent recommendation Peach and MB - our Khyam Ontario 8 was great and the most convenient tent for a child with a walking frame

and after the initial shock of unpacking the double airbeds that my dad had lent to us, to find that one of them was a single, and the kids had to sleep with their feet on blankets, everything went v well (esp after trip to camping shop on Sat )

we went here which was v nice but all stuff about 'staying on a farm' a bit of a stretch

anyhoo, we do have some issues now that we need a bit of help with if mners are up to it

the real reason we are camping is because of dd1, who walks with a walking frame, and the very low number of disabled accessible holiday cottages (and the even lower number of same that are not designed for little old people)

but at the weekend there were lots of children roaming, playing, climbing, and dd1 got a bit sick of answering their questions about why she was in a frame. At home everyone is used to seeing her about so she doesn't have to deal with that so much, but it happened all the time and the kids, being kids, weren't particularly polite about it. Also we realised that in a couple of years dd2 will be old enough to join these children, and dd1 will be left out, being unable to run around fields/ climb trees and walls/ play games in the same way (and her speech takes a bit of a while to 'tune into', so children decide more or less straight away that they don't understand her and stop trying

so are there smaller sites that we can go to? tbh we aren't really bothered about facilities - we don't want a playground, we could even do without loos since we are going to have to get a luggable loo because it takes dd1 so long to walk to the toilet unless you are right next to it

when we caravanned as a child there used to be places (CLs) where you could go where there were 5 vans tops, usually in some farmer's field or someone with a massive back garden

are there teh same kind of thing for tents? or is there a way of picking little sites? or are they all big and is this what kids do on camping holidays, in which case we need to rethink a bit

ta

Glad you had a good time and all survived

The Camping & Caravanning Club have 1,200 eeny weeny Certificated sites that'll never have more than 5 caravans + a few tents - guess this is the kind of thing you remember.

On a big site I thik it'll always be huge packs of children running wild.

Hi Cappucino,

Glad you enjoyed your first camping trip - albeit with a few probs - and want to go again.

I think most larger / mid sized campsites have some kind of adventure playground or play area - it's such a shame that the other kids didn't include your daughter in their play. We personally avoid any campsite with a bar / kids clubs etc. that sort of thing as we like the quiet life too . It would be a shame for you to be put off if the campsite wasn't right for you.

There are still some campsites like you describe around and we have been to some really nice ones in mid and North Wales in particular. I'm sure some cleverer MNer than me will be able to come up with a list but if you ever wanted to camp in Wales i'm your woman! If not i'm sure others here can recommend ones where you would want to go.

See - some cleverer MNer than me did find a list in the time it took me to type .

oh MrsBadger you always come to my rescue

that is exactly the kind of thing

I didn't know if they did them for tents, ours were Certified Locations and were Caravan Club

thank you thank you

if you are up for Wales there is a teeny site at this marina on the canal at Pencelli in the Brecon Beacons but it might be caravans only.

and if you ever win the lottery try these folk
