...I'm due on my period the day we go!
Any tips for handling this in the wild?!

I think I'd like to get a camping toilet just to put my mind at ease, even though we will only be there one weekend. We don't have a toilet tent and are borrowing all our gear so would need something that can be used safely in the tent porch or living area...

Sorry to be grim but would it be better to get something with liners so used products and toilet paper etc just gets thrown away with the contents? Or separate plastic bag for this, and get a bucket I can empty into the toilet?

We don't have much space in the car so if anyone has any recommendations, I'd be so grateful. I have my eye on This one, would this be suitable?

Thanks for all the advice!
I have thought about the period delay tablets but I didn't want it to mess up my cycle too much.
I normally just wear period pants on a night time, or a sanitary pad so will be doing the same while camping. I'll still need to wee though, and I was more concerned about me usually needing to wee more during my period (I think I'm just more sensitive?) and I don't sleep as well as usual. So essentially I am expecting to wake and need to pee more than usual at night, and potentially be absolutely bursting and at risk of a leak on a morning toilet walk before I can pee / change pad.

Sooo, I have bought one of those folding toilets for £20 off Amazon and have just got some strong toilet bags to like it, and some powder that will turn liquid into gel.

I'll have it in the tent for overnight wees only, and possibly the morning wee (if I decide not to walk to the campsite toilets) and I'll just empty it first thing in the actual toilets where I can give myself a good clean with some wipes.

I honestly feel so much better just having the option. I'm a lifetime anxious pee-er 😂 so I can guarantee I'll go have my last wee in the toilets, then get into my sleeping bag and immediately need a wee again 😂

Long time camper here although my period days are behind me.

We used a bucket type loo just for nights and took it to site loos first thing. I used nappy sacks for sanitary products and disposed of them in the site facilities too.

You can get v low ‘bucket’ type loos in The Range and Go Outoors; on the way you can use them for extra storage and there are usually places to clean them on every site too.

Hope you enjoy the trip.

This is what I plan to do, thank you x

It's going to be a lot easier and simpler just to use the campsite facilities - using a toilet/camping bucket in a tent at night in the dark is more hassle and everyone can hear everything in tents, including the neighbours. It will be quicker and more discreet to just go to the toilet block

stichguru · 24/06/2025 21:29

I am a camper with a disability which means that I wee more and don't remember the way between the tent and toilet block in the dark. We have one of these and it's a godsend:

No more getting cold and wet in the night, no more getting lost, no more waking up bursting and not making it. Doesn't smell. We manage 3 of us for two nights. Often it's just one wee from me each night, but even if it's 6 wees, one each, each night, it doesn't smell. We can leave it in the tent for 2 nights, 6 wees and empty it in toilet disposal on the way out of the site.

Just go to the toilets - trick is to have crocs or wellies you can slip on, a rain jacket or fleece and umbrella if weather isn’t on your side. So much better than a portaloo

ilooktothehills · 24/06/2025 21:44

We have one of these that we’ve used for night-time emergencies whilst camping:

I have this from Argos.
I line the bucket with a biodegradable bag and a few handfuls of wood based cat litter.

But why not go to the toilets?

It's a bit gross to piss all over a campsite when there's perfectly decent toilets. You've already left the tent

Because, on my favourite campsite, to get to the toilets you have to cross the field, clamber across a stream (no bridge), walk across a bog on a plank and climb up another field with a 1 in 2 gradient to get to the toilets. Or, if you stay in the overflow field, you have to walk down a field with a 1 in 2 gradient, up the road, down the farm drive and past a collie dog they keep in a pen that always barks when you walk past. And I have a small bladder, and have to piss about 3x a night. I was there this weekend in splendid isolation in the overflow field, so pissed al fresco night and day.

Do you think it's "gross" when you see cows doing it? 😆 Are you the kind of person that never goes on a hike because "Ooh ooh, what if I need the loo?!"

AmyDuPlantier · 24/06/2025 22:58

Moon cup! Whack it in, empty it once a day, give it a wipe, stick it back in. Done.

No. I just think it's pretty gross to piss all over a campsite. It's not great for the grass or the plants. I've been on many hikes, including long treks without a toilet where we had to dig a hole to piss in every night, as a result I've learnt proper toileting which includes not just pissing all over your campsite

I will have an outdoor wee if required, but on campsite with toilet facilities where you've probably got a reasonably high concentration of people, no.

Many animals incidentally don't just piss everywhere, they have a dedicated 'toilet'. A cow or a sheep doesn't have the option of using a toilet but for example pigs will have a dedicated pissing zone away from where they sleep.

Allthebubbles · 25/06/2025 08:09

Ibuprofen really reduces period flow. You could try taking that on heavy days to make it a bit more manageable?

You dug a hole to piss in? Why on earth?! 😆
I refer you to the 3 Ps advice I posted upthread.

The grass is absolutely fine, and always has been!
