Anyone been? How was it? Particularly the tent camping pitches 😊

Any places nearby that you can recommend for a nice meal on one night?

I’ve not camped there, but love North Berwick.
My favourite place to eat is the rocketeer. You would need to book though as it’s small and busy. Or get a take away and eat on the beach.

@MsMarble North Berwick looks lovely 😊 we’re looking forward to having a few days to explore.
I should have specified in the OP that I don’t eat seafood 🫠😂

I camped there in September 2023. It was really nice, the pitches at that point were nicely spread about and there were some picnic tables that you could use close to your tent. The pitch I was on was well kept and level. I was along the hedge, which provided shelter during an "interesting" night of storms with 45 mph gusts, but it was adjacent to the road. The road isn't particularly busy but you could hear the cars going past. Other pitches are available in the middle of the field, but I preferred having the hedge and road tbh. The toilet and shower block by the tents were nice enough and clean enough, but not very modern. The ones up by the caravan/camper part were very modern and very nice and worth the extra walk to use. DS who was 5 at the time like the park and there were kids with bikes, who obviously had more room in their car than we did!

It's a very easy walk to Tesco, which was really useful and we took the path through the golf course, towards the beach and walked through to the town as well. Better there than back which is a steep climb! There is a a great little tidal pool for paddling with a bucket and spade library so you don't need to take your own. I would recommend a boat trip to Bass Rock as well. Weather permitting.

The Rocketeer is lovely, and you can get food other than seafood there, Osteria was good and we had a cheap and cheerful meal at the North Berwick Diner which is predominantly fish and chips but did a nice enough pizza when it was raining and we wanted some shelter. Most restaurants in the town are small though, so may require some booking. If anyone in your party does like seafood, I would say the lobster shack at the harbour is lovely too. Their chowder and bread warmed my chilly late September heart. Hopefully you are going in warmer times!

Herringbone in N Berwick is lovely and has lots of non-seafood, regular menus and specials

I did a couple of nights there last summer. Have to say it wasn't my scene. No views from the pitch at all but surrounded by high hedges...felt enclosed and dark despite the good weather. It's a well-kept neat and tidy site, which to me seemed fussy and lacking character. Too much tarmac and concrete, not enough greenery.
I was on my own in a little tent, using it as a base to cycle from.
Whenever I was around the tent, the bored man with the whiny, demanding wife from the family tent next door openly stood outside and gawked at me. Bit uncomfortable. I'm not a looker or anything...he probably wished he was alone with a bike as well, rather than being sniped at all day long. She had a very loud, annoying voice and was obsessed with putting things away and keeping clothes clean.

I've stayed in much better sites but unfortunately down North berwick way, there's little choice. Tantallon is it really. Don't think I'd stay there again.

@BangersAndGnash Thank you! We have a Buzzworks restaurant very close to us at home which is our favourite 😁 didn’t realise there was one in NB too! We’ll give it a try 😊

@pictoosh thank you 😊 a well kept & tidy site will suit us well. It’s a first camping trip and we have a young child so hopefully it will be fine for us. Just wanted somewhere with decent facilities and not too far from home for our first trip 😊

I’ll probably be that wife so I can’t comment on that 🙈😂😂

We've stayed there with a camper van, perfectly nice site and we were lucky enough to have a really amazing sunset one night. The golf course next door closed for play early evening so you could wander across to the coastal path without risking a head injury which was quite nice.

Second Herringbone for a good range of food, but NB is a busy wee place so best to book.

Our stay was slightly marred by being woken up in the early hours by our smoke alarm going off at earsplitting volume because the battery had gone. It was a sealed unit so we had to put it under the duvet and hammer it to bits before it would stop. I had a brief moment where I thought I would have to run over to the sea in my pyjamas and throw it in the water. Nobody gave us grief in the morning so hopefully they had no idea who made the terrible noise...

BangersAndGnash · 12/06/2025 23:34

Definitely book, for Herringbone

They do the most fantastic spicy margarita cocktail

@StanfreyPock 😂😂 Sounds like a stressful moment in the trip 😂

Going to sort out our plans and book Herringbone for a nice lunch or dinner 😊 thanks!

@BangersAndGnash That sounds like exactly what I might need to get me through my first camping experience 😂🙈

Oh this brought back memories. Tantallon was the first place I ever took my ds camping. It's a lovely wee site.
We had a great pitch near the shower block. Beautiful walks with views across the sea. Loads of nice places to eat in North Berwick, plus the beach of course. There a nice leisure centre with pool overlooking Berwick law if it rains!

@Misspotterer Aww lovely 😊 Sounds like it will be perfect for us. And thank you for the leisure centre tip! I may stick our swimming stuff in just incase 😊

If you have kids, there is a lovely sea pool at one end of east beach (the beach where the camping site goes down to). A lot of kids use their floats etc in there.

Almost 5year old coming with us so this sounds great 😊
