Do campsites have electrical sockets to charge airbeds?

Hello, I am thinking of getting an airbed to make my camping experience more comfortable. I have never been to a campsite before but have got my tent ready and my lovely festival solar light to hang inside.

I was thinking of roughing it on the floor with just a blanket underneath for warmth, but I've been a single airbed on offer and I'm tempted, but where can I plug the airpump into?

Thanks 😊

Get a pump that runs off your car, or check with each campsite whether the pitches have electric hook up.

ask for a ehu pitch and take a ehu cable.Lidl has a camping event with ehu cables

Get a small battery powered pump.

A car powered pump is fine. I used to put a picnic blanket under my airbed to help stop the cold coming up through the ground.

enjoy your camping.

Just get an airbed with a battery pump. All the ones I’ve had come with small battery driven ones.

You can get a rechargeable 12v pump that you can charge from your car's cigarette lighter socket. Means you're not attached to the car by an annoying cable whilst you're pumping.

Eta: I imagine the way that rechargeable devices are heading that you could probably charge one from a power bank, and I bet there are pumps now that you can charge from both mains and 12v.

Don't forget the existence of simple Mark 1 footpumps though- they're very cheap and it takes less effort than you'd imagine to pump a single air mattress up.

You could get a self inflating mat for around £15.
No pump needed and they don’t puncture and deflate as easily as airbeds

Thank you very much everyone. There's some food for thought there.

An electrical pump of any kind (mains, 12v, rechargable etc) is really a bit OTT just for pumping up an airbed when a cheap, lightweight, hand or foot pump will do it in just a few minutes.
Get a multiway socket for plugging into the EHU by all means as it can make life a lot more civilised but I personally would not worry about anything other than a manual pump (speaking as someone who has blown air beds up by mouth in the past).

I have to admit though, that upon arriving on a French campsite in 40 degree heat as a single mum, putting up our massive canvas frame tent (the Great Green Shed) and then being faced with 3 air mattresses to blow up, I'd have murdered someone for an electric pump.

(What goes around comes around though- the small child who was a hindrance then is now a gym obsessed 15 year old who loves demonstrating his manliness by pumping up all the airbeds 😆).

Electric hook up! We also take a kettle for our morning tea

BangersAndGnash · 08/06/2025 20:45

Look at self inflating mats at Decathlon or similar.

SIMS have inbuilt insulation because they have a foam core. They fill with air when you undo the valve, and you can blow in a few extra puffs depending on how firm you want it.

Otherwise if you go for the airbed get a foot pump or a small pump that runs off your car. Or battery operated.

Some sites might have plugs in the toilet block for hair dryers but it isn’t guaranteed, and looking for a site with EHU and buying a cable just for an air bed pump would be total overkill.

MigGril · 08/06/2025 20:57

If you want electric on your pitch you normally have to pay a higher pitch price and unless you have a ehu cable as above you won't be able to plug into it.

Your options are buy the kit for electric and book an electric pitch or buy an battery powered pump.

Which you go for depends on budget, how long your camping for (I don't mind no electric for few days but any longer and it's good for other stuff) and if you'll use it again or not.

A foot pump is fine for an airbed.

Chazbots · 08/06/2025 21:00

Alpkit do a really good self-inflating airbed. My DH slept on one for 2 years as our dog wasn't well...it wasn't meant to be 2 years but things just got out of hand. After a year, I bought his one as an upgrade to the floor and it's very comfortable, the Dozer.
