They still want to camp in the rain!

People we are going camping with this half term still insisting on going even though the forecast is constant rain and temperatures of 13/14 degrees.

They’re DP’s family so he can tell them we aren’t going but it’s not unreasonable to not want to sit inside a bloody tent in the rain for a week isn’t it? DD will end up on a screen the whole time. If it was raining and 20C that’s slightly different but rain, wind and cold is just not fun. Plus we have a canvas tent which needs to be packed away bone dry and due to current living circumstances we’d need to put the thing up in a park to have any chance of drying it out.

Surely I’m not being unreasonable here? The journey is 5 hours as well so it’s a mammoth trip make in the first place.

Oh, sorry, I see you are going to a different part of the country.

I don’t mind that at all - and have done it many times - but not when it rains every single day.

It’s a field on a farm with nothing close by. Last year we went and we had rain but quite a few dry days and that was totally fine. But when the first ‘not raining all day’ day is 4 days into the camping trip, I’m very much not on board. 4 days of cold wet kids with no way of drying clothes / towels etc. There’s only so much Dobble and Uno we can play.

We have a camper van. We go when the weather is fabulous. I wouldn't consider it if it was going to rain for more than part of one of the days . Not a chance I'd go if it was just tents, children and rain. That's just an endurance test I'm not willing to inflict on myself

Allschoolsareartschools · 22/05/2025 07:59

No, it sounds a bit miserable & no holiday should have to be 'a challenge'.
Cornwall has its own weather a lot of the time. I can remember getting a text from a friend saying how lucky we were with the good weather for our holiday once. In reality we'd had to go to the shops, pub & cinema to escape the relentless rain! The rest of the country was dry but not for us.
Possibly biased because I've never camped & never plan to but I'd not bother.

elusiveemz · 22/05/2025 08:01

I love camping, but I'd only go if it was warm or dry. I can't imagine anything worse than being cold and damp on holiday. I always see camping as a slightly cheaper holiday, when we can't afford to do anything else - days to the beach, walking etc. If we couldn't do that and ended up having to pay for bowling, museums, days out...it ends up getting incredibly expensive.

Obviously in the minority but wouldn’t occur to me to cancel. The beauty of camping (obvs just for me) is that you get a total brain break as you’re focussing on physical tasks that normally don’t need your attention. Lots of walks to the pubs, games of cards in each other’s tents, hot chocolate and hot water bottles are such a treat on a cold day. Take plenty of spare clothes and see it as a challenge.

"See it as a challenge". It's not the bloody D of E it's a family holiday. We all know Op will be the one packing for every wet/ muddy blah blah option and will be the one dealing with the washing of everything when they get home. Holidays with children are always hard work. Holidays in a tent in a field in the rain are just shit. And don't get me started on bloody board games . Absolutely hate bloody board games. The very words make me twitch.

Hedonism · 22/05/2025 08:43

This made me laugh! I agree. All of these posts about how, with a bit of ingenuity and clever clothing choices, you can make the best of it. Or.... You could stay at home and be dry and warm?!

I’m firmly on the side of camping and hiking is fun in all weathers for those of us that like it.

However, with kids and family in tow who get fed up, and where it’s just camping (ie. Not as part of an expedition), hell no. Fine weather only, or a couple of rain showers, but not bad weather.

i learned that lesson years ago 😂

I agree. With a family, fair weather camping all the way. If it is forecast rain and those temperatures for the week it would be a solid no from me.

I love camping but it needs to be 19-20 degrees minimum in the day and now lower than 8 -10 degree at night.

andtheworldrollson · 22/05/2025 08:56

Off topic but where is getting this rain? Our garden would love some

am a very keen and happy camper but if it really is 5 days solid rain then I would not bother - no location has 5 days of cheap indoor entertainment available , it would end up costing a fortune

S0j0urn4r · 22/05/2025 09:08

I don't understand the issue. You don't want to go so don't go. If DP and kids still want to go they can. If not they don't.
Other people still want to go? Fine, they can crack on.
I've camped in the rain but would avoid if there was a clear forecast of persistent rain.

It’s Devon. The forecasts are changing. It’s still wet and some days are supposedly constant rain. More importantly it’s still cold.

But we are going because we’ve agreed to leave on Thursday and chase the weather.

andtheworldrollson · 22/05/2025 09:21

I hope that chase the weather doesn’t mean you end up camping in your back garden !

I would say I wil make a last minute call and everyone else can make their own choices

Talipesmum · 22/05/2025 09:30

Have you looked on other weather forecasts? BBC weather always makes the rain look much worse than it is. Met office is suggesting a bit of rain but mostly dry days with sun. And none of them are that accurate by location more than a few days in advance.

Believe me, I’ve been looking at every single forecast going for the last nearly 2 weeks!

It gorgeous in Devon today so I hope you make it in time. I’ve had beach walk with the dog and a fab swim in the sea before work. Forecast looks lush for this evening.

We aren’t coming until Saturday. But the forecast is changing so who knows!

Camping in the rain is severely fucking miserable. I’ve done it a couple times, never ever again. I ended up sitting in the car reading my kindle for half of it.

Clevs · 22/05/2025 12:34

The weather in the UK is so unpredictable especially this time of year so we always book campsites that have indoor things to do like a swimming pool, arcade, bar/restaurant. Those sorts of sites usually have laundry rooms too so you can at least dry towels and clothes if they get wet.

We’ve got a motorhome so luckily have somewhere to shelter and keep warm if the weather is bad but it’s still nice to have other indoor spaces to escape to if necessary.

I am so pissed the weather is going to be so shite , We are going on Tuesday till Saturday to Eyri and I’m packing winter clothes 😳 I was expecting to pack shorts and t shirts etc, if it wasn’t that we have already paid ( a lot!) I think is not bother going. But we are and I’m trying to be prepared. And have just realised my 12 daughter doesn’t have any wellies that fit 😳

We are going Monday-Friday same area and I’m so nervous as it looks so rubbish!

We also have no wet weather gear - as DD6 is growing at speed at the moment. I ordered an all in one for next day delivery (NEXT) and I’m hoping we can squeeze her feet into her wellies.

I hope the weather has been better than forecast for you as we’ve had some lovely sunny days in East Devon. However I’m aware that north Devon can often be really different.
