Lake District - tiny quiet sites

tpmumtobe · 21/01/2025 14:20

Can anyone recommend a tiny quiet campsite in the Lakes? Ideally with individual separate pitches, tents only. We're basically after wild camping but I won't manage a week without a hot shower so some basic facilities and somewhere to re-freeze freezer blocks, if poss.

Family of 4, two teen boys. Somewhere that sticks to a 10pm curfew, doesn't allow music etc. But does allow a fire. Bonus points if it's got farm animals or some sort of stream/pond/woods for the kids to muck about in.

Any idea much appreciated!

Have a look at Hollows Farm near Grange in Borrowdale.

tattooshka · 21/01/2025 18:56

I stayed at one near the pace where you can do water sports ...fell foot. But the camp was a good walk from there Nearer newby bridge. Social district looks to be the same. V v basic when I went. Portaloo only. No washing facilities. But right on the lake. Beautiful setting.

We love The Great Langdale NT campsite, it's quiet and you can get some nice pitches. They aren't individual either so maybe not want you want.
The Eskdale NT one is smaller and quieter.
Baysbrown campsite is also really nice, in the Langdale valley. It's on a farm.
Skyeside campsite by Brotherswater arms is good. You can defo have a fire there but you need your own firepit as it can't be on the ground. It has separate pitches and isn't to big. We stayed there last summer.

Tarn foot campsite by Loughrigg Tarn. Don't think they have showers though. Or electric hook up. Very very basic but lovely spot

tattooshka · 21/01/2025 21:27

Yes. The site is called "social district ". Sorry for rambling message earlier

TheFlyingHorse · 21/01/2025 21:49

I was going to suggest some already mentioned here. You could look at Turner Hall Farm in the Duddon Valley or Syke Farm in Buttermere.

tpmumtobe · 21/01/2025 21:49

Brilliant, thanks everyone these all sound up our street, will have a proper look at them all this evening!

Low Wray at windermere

NannyR · 21/01/2025 21:54

Low wray NT camp site near Windermere is quite a big site, but it has some lovely, secluded woodland pitches.

Fisherground campsite in Eskdale would be good for your needs. It has a small stream and natural pool that has tyre rafts for the kids to play on along with a large wooden play structure that my pre teen boys still loved. There’s also a rocky mound in the centre which they loved climbing up and playing hide and seek tag round. They had fire pits on each pitch included when we went. It’s quite a strict site too, literally went silent in the evening.

Ah thank you, but we stayed at Fisherground last time we were in the Lakes (about 6 years ago) and although the setting was lovely and the kids loved the pond and the railway it was absolutely heaving, we were hemmed in by tents on all sides, our neighbours were playing guitar and singing awful Oasis covers (very badly) until gone midnight most nights and site staff were indifferent and rude and not prepared to enforce curfews. We'd have packed up and left if we hadn't driven 9 hours to get there! It was that stay that has made us so picky about campsite choice ever since!

Funny though, it does show that lots of sites have the potential to be lovely, and it only takes one or two idiots or disinterested staff to ruin it for people!

National Trust Wasdale is amazing, would recommend without reservation!

LushLemonTart · 09/02/2025 15:14

@tpmumtobe has anyone mentioned this one?

LushLemonTart · 09/02/2025 15:14

Hiya, yes that's on the shortlist. We'd considered NT Wray at first but it looks too big and busy for DH but Langdale looks better. Have you stayed, does it get very busy in peak season?

We're also looking at Rydall Hall which looks lovely but is SO expensive!!

Last camped at Windermere about 3 years ago. Chose NT site, thinking it would be good. Worst site we’ve stayed at. Pitches on top of each other and a revolting lavatory/shower block. Unless it’s had a major renovation since then, avoid like the plague!

LushLemonTart · 09/02/2025 16:15

@tpmumtobe I haven't stayed there but walked past.

I love this site and I've camped there several times!!
Disclaimer: I've only ever stayed through the week in term time so maybe it's much busier on weekends and school holidays, but the woodland pitches are lovely and private and the shower blocks and wash up facilities have always been clean.

VeryDeepEverything · 09/02/2025 21:14

This is basic and quiet but you don't need your own tent, so it doesn't tick all your boxes, but you might be interested?

Really glad you’ve enjoyed it. We were about 6 feet from our neighbours (one of whom snored, which did cause much giggling, tbh), the showers were barely a trickle, slugs in the shower trays and the lights didn’t work. Didn’t help that our pitch was on a slope either so when it peed down (in early July) it ran into our tent and soaked our stuff.
Only good thing was the wood fired pizza van that had a big awning so we could eat without getting wet 😁
