Ok, call me a lightweight but I'm dreading this camping thing!

I made a BIG mistake. On one of our exceedingly rare non-children evenings out with friends last weekend, I had one too many glasses of vino and in a mad moment, agreed to go camping with them at the end of May - somewhere in the New Forest. I am now regretting it BIG TIME.... but I'm not one for backing out and dh is delighted, two dd's aged 4 and 10 are both not sure what to make of it but willing to give it a go. Have managed to get our camping-mad neighbours to lend us a largeish tent (apparently), some blow up mattresses (they said their special ones that don't get freezing??)..., a table/chairs and some cooking stuff. I'll buy some sleeping bags and have read some posts here with useful tips on other suggestions for kit so I guess it's all systems go...HOWEVER, I am absolutely DREADING it.

Firstly, I hate the cold/the wet/outside generally - I'm much more of an indoor person. Secondly, I can't imagine how the kids are going to be kept happy as they are both scared of the dark - almost as much as they are afraid of virtually every bug on this planet.... and my eldest, taking a chip off the old block, is utterly disgusted at the idea that she might have to pee in a bucket or walk across a field to have one in the night. Also, what on earth do you do all day long? Isn't it boring?? My only memories as a child of camping are going with my dad and his friend and "the kids" (sensible mums taking a break in some hotel) whilst we attempted to sleep in a two man tent in the rain, with a cold sausage sandwich and being permanently wet and miserable.

Sorry, I know that those of you reading this are probably the outdoorsy types who love nothing more than living with nature, but to be honest, I'd really appreciate an insight into why this is such a great thing to do so that I can tell my kids - and try to convince myself that we are all going to have a wonderful time!!
Thanks

oh know. it all sounded marvellous until you got to the waking up damp part. no one told me about that.

cheeset · 13/06/2008 16:27

Nappy, I recommend a KETTLE for hot water, you fool ha

PInkyminkyohnooo · 13/06/2008 16:27

cheeset- why do you wake up damp?

nappyaddict · 13/06/2008 16:27

oh right when you said hot water i thought you meant like tap hot not boiling hot.

nappyaddict · 13/06/2008 16:30

she's obviously getting a lot of sleeping bag action

PInkyminkyohnooo · 13/06/2008 16:33

I see- definitely recommend the duvet rather than the mummy bag, in that case!

cheeset · 13/06/2008 16:33

PInkyminkyohnooo, I have a flock airbed and its always damp on the flock bit, sweating, condensation I guess? Anyone know?

I don't notice it when I'm asleep so not a prob and I always lift the bag off and leave it to dry.

A good campsite helps the camping jolly. We always go to RiverDart in Devon its fab. I just can't work out how to do those pesky links but heres goes-

I could have posted the same thread about 4 years ago. Now I am a complete camping fan, it is really fun and the kids will LOVE it. They will make tons of friends. It's so lovely being out in the fresh air (when it's not bloody raining!!) and it gives the kids a great chance to run about and feel free.

Plus when you go with friends, once the kids are all tucked up, you can have a drink.

We always have at least 1 BBQ, and normally try and find a good family pub for the rest of our meals out.

Let us know how you get on once you've been.

cheeset · 13/06/2008 16:39

nappyaddict, how wrong you are about the sleeping bag action

DD and I share a pod and DS & DH the other, works for me! This way, I know dc's are safe
and I can put a little distance between me and DH's snoring-OMG its sooooo loud!

After a day in river dart I'm knackered. I in bed bout 9 ish when it gets dark.

Has anyone mentioned about popping your pj's on under your clothes before it gets dark/too cold. Then when you get into bed your done I really am sad it's official
To feel smug about camping tips - well...

BB eviction tonight yae!

PInkyminkyohnooo · 13/06/2008 16:40

I see, I wonder if a fitted sheet would help? I do find that now we have a tent with a full inner rather than all in one we don't have any condensation problems- it may be more to do with the nylon tent than the airbed? I've never got on with those mummy bags- I like my duvet!

That campsite looks fab.

We have gone to their more 'luxury' campsites since we stopped being students, many years ago- I agree they make for a much more enjoyable experience. I know some people like the minmal campsites but I like hot running water and clean showers etc. We go mainly to club sites with the children.

SantaBarbara · 13/06/2008 16:46

Cheeset, it's only because I'm 103 that I think that way.

Might be quite nice to have a light to read by at night, and an easy cup of coffee in the morning......

Perversely I go at camping like it's a challenge. It's lovely when I stop.

Love2bake · 13/06/2008 16:49

Just realised the OP posted this 2nd MAY!!!

How did you get on OP???

SantaBarbara · 13/06/2008 16:51

Blimey. I thought it was just now. How'd it get bumped to here?

OP has no idea we've hijacked her thread.

cheeset · 13/06/2008 16:51

I'm going to bring my duvet this year, just can't settle when I feel restricted I get all aggrivate and it keeps me awake. Going to bring a hot water bottle too-

Life in the fast lane

Help me I'm so borrrring

Right, I'm going to go and do something now like play with the dc's or plan tonights meal or I could just put my glad rags on a give a couple of girlfriends a call and we could all go for a fabulous meals and then dance the night away!

No....., i'm off to the chippy for a portion large followed by that arduous bedroom routine of 'ning, ning, ning, ning, 'you said I could have milk, you said I could stay up a bit longer you said'

PInkyminkyohnooo · 13/06/2008 17:12

lol at the old thread! I'm all for a bit f recycling!

nappyaddict · 13/06/2008 17:32

are those inflatable pillows any good?

nappyaddict · 13/06/2008 17:32

are those inflatable pillows any good?

PInkyminkyohnooo · 13/06/2008 20:07

Sorry, Nappyaddict, got way-laid by the whole bathtime bedtime thingy.

I've never tried inflatable pillows. We have lilos and our pillows from home. I noticed that decathalon are doingthis all in one self inflating mattress with zippable sleeping bags that also has the pocket for the pillows- I wonder if anyone here has tried it, it would certainly be compact to pack.
