Stove gas

I've taken the plunge and bought a double stove. Am fed up with precariously balancing things on my single burner and waiting half an hour for a cup of tea! I grabbed a bargain Campingaz Lagon. Looks like it'll do the job nicely with no unecessary frills to attack my sense of minimalist survival .

Anyway, I now realise (doh) that the gas I need is pretty expensive. Looks like I need a Campingaz 907 cylinder, or a Calor 4.5kg butane or propane (can't find my scrap of paper...). What do you recommend? Any hints for where to get it (cheap)?

Also, what are the guidelines on cooking in the porch bit of the tent? If it's howling and chucking it down, is it ok to cook inside with a door open a little bit to vent? Or am I going to kill us all?!

IIRC, we had to pay for the cylinder (£15???) and then had to pay to get it filled (another £15 I think) And then you also need the regulator on the top, so quite a large initial outlay. Does that sound about right?

Though the gas does last a couple of weeks, again IIRC, and we do a good half hour's cooking on it every evening so not too bad in that respect.

I don't think you'll kill anyone cooking inside the porch (not from gas anyway) but you just need to be careful not to set the tent on fire - that's the bit I always get paranoid about. And I'm sufficiently paranoid to insist the canister is always kept outside the tent at night.

Yes, those numbers sound about right - guess I just have to accept it... Good to know it lasts a couple of weeks though. What do you mean by IIRC?

I'm more paranoid about the invisible things, like gas poisoning! At least I can SEE there's no flames

Thanks for your help!

I have often cooked in the porch - you just need to be careful. It is quite an expensive outlay but the gas lasts ages. You can buy ready filled bottles from most camping shops and then just need the hose and regulator as well.

Thanks guys. (must...prise...open...purse string fingers...). Wow, the luxury of making tea and beans AT THE SAME TIME!!! Gotta be worth it

Have a look at this thread from ukcampsites. They give good explanations for the differences between the various types of gas.

Impatience · 25/04/2008 13:06

Aha, very helpful Dusty, thank you.

There seems to be disagreement on that thread: Does a 4.5kg cylinder last a couple of weeks or a couple of years? What do you have and how long does it last?!

PeachesMcLean · 25/04/2008 16:25

IIRC is If I remember correctly.... Sorry.

Look at all the things I am learning today

We have a Camping gaz 907 and it's lasted us a coule of years without needing to be filled - we do ahve ehu though so take a travel kettle for that early morning cuppa which saves on gas.

try Freecycle or ebay for the cylinder, then get it filled at a camping shop.

Impatience · 26/04/2008 11:44

Thanks Lucycat. A couple of years sounds good to me!

I just called our local dump looking for one and they've just had the bin emptied so it looks like I'll be forking out for one.

greedygreedyguzzler · 29/04/2008 13:17

Impatience · 29/04/2008 18:14

Don't call me that, Greedy! What will the nice camping ladies think?!

Yes, 'tis I. Still never conceived, but getting over it bit by bit. You're right: dp's pregnant with no.2, and lots have things have really worked out for us lately, so life's pretty good!

How about you? Have you had your immaculately conceived babe yet? Do go camping with the kids, and try a festival!

Now, back to gas. I was lucky: my local tip had a 4.5kg calor butane bottle the man gave me for a smile. Perfect!

nice to see you perve (she really is a perve nice camping ladies!......cant remember why, but i know a long time ago she said something vaguely pervy and its stuck!!) yes i had my immaculately concieved baby last october. shes called marcy and is a huge lump of gorgeous cuddliness! i was looking for you on here a few months ago to ask advice about my sis who was ttc your way, but you werent around! anyway, lovely to see you out of the hut of gloom or whatever it was called!

we are just going to try one nights camping first and we were talking about a festival, but just a day one so we will do the two things seperately to start with and then maybe progress to camping at a festival next year depending on this years success!

Impatience · 29/04/2008 19:19

Sounds good, Greedy. Push your sis in direction of the gay parents section if she still needs advice. Is she still going for it/done it/given up/trying to figure it all out? Good luck to her.

Nice to see you about! Do those months in the Hut seems very long ago to you? Funny how things change so.

(Sorry for hijacking - unless you can say we are gassing, so it's allowed Double-sorry. I'll get my hat...)

greedygreedyguzzler · 30/04/2008 17:51

you cant hijack your own thread perve!!! my sis had success about 4 months ago but then miscarried which was so so sad after trying for 3 1/2 yrs (not AI just ttc). anyway she knows it works so they will be trying again soon.

hows your dp finding pg with a little one to look after?

Impatience · 01/05/2008 11:19

Oh, sorry to hear your sis mc'd. Well, good luck to her in the future. I adopted ds in December: things have got quite a lot better for gay parents lately. Hopefully she'll be one soon!

Dp is ok, it's work that's the effort, not ds. Annoying how much she's got to get sorted before she goes off. She's supposed to be working less not more!
