More tent porn please....

I am a newish camper and would like to get a 4 berth tent with two sleeping compartments and a living area tall enough for two six footers. It should be reasonably light (under 15kg ideally) but good quality (don't want to wake up in a puddle). The budget would probably stretch to £180 tops.

Recommendations please!!

bump - before dh makes me buy the first thing he sees!!

hope you get some replies cause I want to know similar (but for 5 people) and would love to know if a quetchua 2 second tent exists for 5/6 people?

sorry if that's a hijack but it's also a bump

quint · 22/04/2008 21:46

I've just bought an Outwel Hartford XXL, would be too big for you but you could always look at their smaller tents - have sewn in groundsheet (so no waking up in puddles!)

Farb · 22/04/2008 21:48

downbutnotout, is this for a weekend tent or week+, do you need to get a taable & chairs in the living compartment too?

Farb · 22/04/2008 21:49

Oregon 5 for starters

mrspnut · 22/04/2008 21:52

If you can stretch slightly further then I'd recommend this tent - I know loads of people raved about the Montana and this has replaced the montana 4. tent

Farb · 22/04/2008 21:53

Gelert Lokon Vario 5 is a bit bigger

Think it has a riser ground sheet rather than a SIG. I like the porch. RL friend has just bought one for 2 week holiday in france.

hmmmm too heavy though

Farb · 22/04/2008 21:54

mrspnut, I think Blacks & Millets are still selling the Monty 4.

I have a well thumbed catalogue by my uptairs loo

let me try and find it........

Farb · 22/04/2008 21:56

monty 4

bit spenith for down

mrspnut · 22/04/2008 21:56

this is also a good bet

Farb · 22/04/2008 21:58

sorry would love to do more tent porn but have a strange desire to see the Heather MM programme

mrspnut · 22/04/2008 21:58

Farb - that's interesting because Outwell replaced the monty wint the Minnesota last year so that's a really old tent that they're selling.

wohmum · 22/04/2008 22:10

Hi, we've got a brand new outwell sun valley 6 (2006 spec) to sell for around £200 (would probably drop to £180) if you are interested - my other half bought it on ebay last year and we then had the chance of a relative's 'spare' so took that instead. Sorry to post for sale here but thought you may be interested as it's just sitting boxed and wrapped in our garage! I am a regular honest, but more of a lurker than a poster,! we live in middlesex/west london if you are able to collect.

pillowcase · 23/04/2008 00:42

great browsing those sites...

we have a 6 person tent (don't remember brand) which is fine, but it takes us about 40 mins to erect, which is always a pain with 3 little ones needing attention. I thought it would be great to get a really quick tent, but not sure if they exist (apart from teh throw in the air quetschua ones).

How long does it take you to erect yours? (sorry that was sounding rude no matter how I phrase it!)

mrspnut · 23/04/2008 08:31

I can do our Gelert Cadiz 5 by myself in about 30 minutes, including putting the groundsheet in the living area.

That's my weekend taking the kids by myself tent, or maybe if we were just going for one night and the weather was going to be really good because it's not really got enough room for a table and chairs inside.

We have a Wynnster Mercury 9 for our normal tent and that takes 2 of us an hour to put up fully but it has so much room inside that I'd hate to be without it.

I might look out for a replacement this year though with a SIG - depends on funds.

pillowcase · 23/04/2008 09:05

thanks mrspnut for that. I might look into that as we often think of going off for just one night, or stopping once on a longer trip, and the putting up of tent puts us off.

Ideally like you we need a good big tent and a quick tent too.

dustystar · 23/04/2008 11:04

This tent looks nice

dustystar · 23/04/2008 11:10

pillowcaseThis Khyam is pricey but they go up in 15 mins! We have been looking at one of the 4 man ones for weekends.

seeker · 23/04/2008 11:20

Rediculously over budget, but have a look here for tent porn!

downbutnotout · 23/04/2008 13:21

at the time of pillowcase's last Tues post - little ones or tent porn keeping you up at night?!! I'm usually comatose by 11 [knackered old biddy emoticon]

Thanks for all the suggestions - by way of clarification we will be using it first at Latitude but hopefully for more camping after that, if I can overcome dh's innate scepticism. Keep the recommendations coming...

Also pondering your offer wohmum...

This is our new tent. DH is 6' 4" and has plenty of standup room - we haven't used it yet, but have had it up in the garden.

Hoonette · 23/04/2008 15:37

We've just bought an Outwell Colorado 5 and I can recommend it for headroom.

pillowcase · 24/04/2008 16:18

downbutnotout,
i'm just a night owl, that's all, love the night, kids sleeping, dh snoring, and it looks like tent porn will be my new hobby.

lilredWG, I LIKE that tent. 15 mins pitching too. ooohhh, very interested. have you a trip planned soon?

seeker, i can't even look at those tents, well just a little peek, my god the price!

dustystar, thanks for that.

We're thinking of heading off this sat night so we'll be in old tent anyway, but hopefully will have something sorted for the next time.

downbutnotout · 26/04/2008 21:38

Well, I'm excited (and gobsmacked). Took dh to the tent shop today and he, the former tent sceptic, is currently leafing through a catalogue marking all the ones he likes. Looks like the budget may potentially be increased - watch this space!
