We are going to France in September and I was wondering how food prices compare with the UK. Anyone been recently have any information. Thanks.

Reasonably comparable imo.

I wouldn't bank on it being considerably cheaper.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 18/08/2024 15:02

Yep, about the same as here.
wine and beer were cheaper 😊

55larry · 18/08/2024 15:02

I wasn’t expecting ifood to be cheaper but I will be happy that it is not more expensive. Only five weeks until we go!

It depends on the supermarket a bit like in UK. They have Lidl and Aldi depending on where you go. You can Google which supermarkets are cheapest. I have it in my mind that Monoprix and Carrefour are the more expensive ones.

SuperU yesterday (sw France) was 90 euros:
beer x 6
wine x 1
mussels
bread
croissants
yoghurt x 6
Fromage blanc x 6
milk
cheeses
pizza
salad bag
tomatoes
nectarines
Pringles (own version)
Apple tart
newspaper and crappy magazine
football magazine
Diet Coke x2
porridge
syrop
tabulé
chickpea salad

i think that’s what we bought.

Our shopping bills were broadly comparable to home the last couple of years. Meat is more expensive, potatoes are bizarrely expensive! So we ate less potatoes and drank lots of delicious cheap wine instead. Win.

Some things are the same, some much more expensive. We were in the South of France a couple of wks ago and shopped at the local Intermarché. 1kg of chicken breasts is around €11 and whole cucumbers were €1.29. I can't remember any other prices being particularly expensive compared to here.

Wafflefudge · 18/08/2024 15:38

I thought it was very expensive.
Especially meat as noted above.
Wine very cheap, nice bottles for 3euro.

OrangeBlossom28 · 18/08/2024 15:40

Meat wise, yes chicken is dear but it's the same price as it was when we went last summer. Pork shoulder steaks are very reasonably priced if you like to BBQ. We bought some lamb brochettes for the BBQ when we were there and they were €12 for two which was very spendy.

Live in France. Yes, meat is expensive, but veg pretty comparable (and generally better quality). Wine much cheaper, bizarrely excluding champagne, which is cheaper in Lidl in the UK! Leclerc is the cheapest place I know for meat and fresh stuff. Best veg is Fresh or Grand Frais (same group, GF are bigger stores), they also have decent prepacked fish. You can generally get a fishy bargain if you aren't too fussed about the variety. Have a great holiday!

We got home yesterday from 3 weeks camping and would say prices were fairly comparable on a lot of things BUT my food shopping cost a lot more purely down to the fact that it was having to be done on a daily basis and I couldn't best value/larger quantities due to storage and refrigeration limitations! Like PP some things seemed wildly expensive but I'm shocked at paying €3 for wine, we were massively drinking rosé at around the €2 mark and it was delicious 😋. Also if you have a Lidl card, change your language to French you can then use it there and get all the local offers, we kept getting free items as well.

Longhotsummers · 18/08/2024 15:49

Similar price but much better quality, plus the benefit of cheap wine and beer!

Wrapunzel · 19/08/2024 14:43

We're just back from France and my happy place is Hyper U Grin bbq meat was pricey but pastries/bread way nicer and cheaper. The price of wine is my main reason for wanting to move there!

natalienewname · 19/08/2024 14:58

We’ve spend several weeks in France recently and found the food prices in Euros to be less than the Pound amount in the UK. Meat being the only expection, and anything obviously not French. Eg standard pesto was cheaper but fancy Italian imported pesto was more.

Lavendersquare · 19/08/2024 15:25

Heinz tomato ketchup is much cheaper in France, I stocked up last year.

Other than that you should expect prices to be broadly similar to the uk possibly ever so slightly cheaper.

What you will really notice is that there is so much more choice especially around fresh fruit and vegetables, it's sad to see how bad Uk supermarkets are by comparison.

Enjoy your holiday.

Having not long returned from France after 20+yrs living there I think the only thing you will find cheaper is booze & cigs also it depends what part of France your going to. I found markets for fruit & veg very expensive, used Lidl and Le Clerc most of the time ,Aldi was dreadful where we lived. If your eating out go of a lunchtime and have the plat de jour 3 courses and sometimes includes wine/cider eating out of an evening is expensive. If you do eat out of a lunchtime try and get there at 12 as in rural/small towns only open between 12 &2 Have a lovely holiday.

Wafflefudge · 20/08/2024 15:01

Surprised how many are saying its same or cheaper. I found it very expensive.
