Help with camping meal plan please!

Going away for a few days at the end of the month - 2A/3C.

I need a meal plan for while we're there and not sure what to take. The last couple of times we went we weren't very organised and ended up spending far too much.

We'll have a George Foreman grill, a kettle and an electric cool box. Do I need a stove?!

Help would be appreciated.

I love fajitas when camping - you can get bbq lentils packs, falafel, peppers etc. and use your grill for meat and everything really

TheTripThatWasnt · 29/07/2024 23:34

Day 1 - take a chilli/bolognese that youve made at home and frozen. Acts as a cool pack that day, and easy to reheat.
Fajitas also a staple for us.
BBQ at least one night (we have a camping BBQ)
Takeaway pizza or fish and chips one night, if you have access to them.

One burner gas ring , job sorted,

Autumn1990 · 29/07/2024 23:38

the tinned steak is good from M&S and you can use instant rice or tinned potatoes
a fry up works well waffles cook quicker than hash browns
lidl sometimes have big long lift potato rostis that are nice
personally I’d take a two ring gas stove with grill and not the other stuff and then you can cook almost anything.

A grill will be fine for a few nights. Last time we went, we just took the bbq.
These were a big hit with everybody https://realfood.tesco.com/recipes/chicken-naan-wraps.html We warmed the naans on the bbq and there was virtually no washing up!

If you’re going to go camping regularly, I think you should get a stove as it really widens your options. It means you can cook pasta or rice for dinner, and make porridge or pancakes for breakfast!

If you put a saucepan of water in the grill, will it heat enough to boil water or warm something through?

Otherwise, before you go, marinade some chicken and bake it in the oven, then freeze. Defrost and heat through on the grill. Same for some new potatoes, toss them in a mayo mustard mix before you grill them
Fajitas is a great idea, also sausages in buns. Couscous can cook through with boiling water from the kettle (just take a container to put it in that will take boiling water in it) Corn on the cob will cook on a grill, slather in butter and some salt after.
You can wrap salmon pieces loosely in foil with some butter and a splash of white wine and they will cook nicely on the grill (and wont stick/easy clean up).

Halfords gas stove is £15 at the moment. We bought one at the start of last week and used it all week camping and it was perfect.

How does one take a George Foreman grill camping? I thought they were electric?

mitogoshi · 30/07/2024 07:36

Take food to heat through on night one. Night 2 take fish eg salmon, flavoured couscous (just add boiling water), salad and recommend the soy ginger salad dressing from Lidl.

Night 3 something like a curry with precooked rice for ease. I've never tried more than 3 nights cooking when camping!

Top tip for anyone trying to fully cook camping (we mostly eat out) buy a haybox cooker eg a wonderbag - these are an old fashioned idea but made in South Africa for slow cooking without fuel - simply prepare your dish by browning meat, add veg and stock/sauce, cover, bring to boil then put the whole pot into the bag, do up and leave for approximately 6 hours. It's super insulated. You can always bring it fully up to boiling eg to reduce liquid at the end if you leave it longer. Gas required is far lower and so convenient after a busy day on holiday

Our camping recipes include

  • lamb tagine (cook at home, take frozen to campsite, reheat on gas stove) with couscous
  • filled pasta and tomato sauce. Bring pre grated cheese
  • sausages and bacon and fried eggs
  • hot dots on grill.

And go out to the nearest pub.

I’m another one who cooks chill freezes it so it acts as an ice block we eat it with nachos. I’ve reheated those rice pouches in saucepan with a little water they are quick. I have a single burner stove only. I also pre-cook and freeze sausages. We do boiled eggs Sat in a pan off hot water whilst I’m frying bacon. I’ve precooked pasta as my kids like cold pasta salad. French bread or wraps keep well. I also do a sausage, tin of beans & tin tomatoes add a pepper cook freeze simple tea with either bread or wraps.

I’m off to try making chick pea flour now to make chicken pakoras not tried those before and I’m GF so always looking for alternatives.

worrisomeasset · 30/07/2024 08:41

I couldn’t imagine camping without a gas stove. I’d get one or two of those that take gas cartridges that they sell they sell at Halfords, The Range and all camping stores for around £20.

blobby10 · 30/07/2024 09:16

A one or two burner gas stove will be worth its weight in gold! We regularly had chicken and rice - whilst the rice is cooking fry chicken in pan with onions, add any veg, add stock cube and water with cornflour to thicken and hey presto - healthy meal. You could cook the rice with the chicken but its hit and miss with timings. Also bolognaise and pasta, mince and tinned potatoes, chilli and rice. All ever so easy to cook. If you were really ambitious/organised you could pre-chop onions and veg for each meal and keep in a cool box.
Make sure you allow a takeaway or meal out once every 3 or 4 days though to give the chef a break!

Meerkat9 · 24/08/2024 12:40

We just take an airfryer. Can cook anything in that and saves on packing all the pots and pans.

Can also cook inside when it rains

OffTheWalll · 31/08/2024 17:36

Bit late to reply but by easiest camp meal is corned beef hash.

Tinned corned beef, tinned potatoes, tinned peas and carrots, an oxo cube, an onion (if you're feeling fancy and want to fry one off quickly) add seasoning and take a jar of beetroot/pickled cabbage or just HP.

If you're super fancy poach/fry and egg too.

A simple has cooking stove (the ones that come in the little cases) are brilliant.

Wilma55 · 02/09/2024 06:47

Idaho sachet potatoes are an improvement on Smash in my opinion, just add boiling water.

countrygirl99 · 02/09/2024 06:56

We love lamb wraps vamping. Just cook the meat then have in a wrap with hoi sin sin sauce and salad. Minimal washing up.
