if you use the BBQ a lot when camping, do you clean it after every use? We’re heading off in a few days and trying to cut down on unnecessary ’stuff’
With this in mind I thought I could perhaps do breakfast bacon rolls on the BBQ and use it to cook evening meal too. However the thought of waking up on the morning & cleaning a BBQ does not fil me with joy!
How you others figure this out?

Edit; we have a Weber Go-Anywhere

scrape, pre heat, and scrape again.

maldivemoment · 23/07/2024 07:19

Thank you @123456abcdef
Do you mean just scrape the grill pan? Fresh charcoal every time? Seems a lot if I’m just grilling some bacon!

Im overthinking this, aren’t I? 😬

I wouldn't bother with a bbq for bacon, so much faff. Just do it on the stove. You can buy foil bbq trays which reduce the amount of grease and grime on the bbq. You would need to put new coal in but surely the old coal will have burnt down to ash so not a problem.

Talipesmum · 23/07/2024 07:27

I’d find it too much of a faff to light up more charcoal for breakfast bacon - love bbqing in the evening but couldn’t be bothered in the morning. I use one of those little all in one stoves with gas canister - they’re v space efficient.
Cleaning bbq is easy though - just light up the new coals, let it get hot, then scrape the grills clean when it’s hot and let it fall down into the coals.

Thanks folks.

BbQ now reserved for evening meals only. 👍🏻

it’s been a few years since we’ve camped so I’ve forgotten how much ‘stuff’ is needed! And we’re fairly low maintenance campers! Argh…

I usually do juice boxes and croissants / chocolate spread and pain au chocolate (the prepackaged ones) when camping. Kids are happy with that and it gives me the chance to focus on the very important business of a hot drink for me and DH. If I am in the mood I will take some pre packed porridge pots and have one of them with hot water from the kettle. Agree with @WonderingWanda foil trays are your bbq buddy on holiday and the cheap stoves with the gas (like a can of hairspray) are the best stove for everything else. We spent £££ on a Cadac gas bbq system for camping and it was a waste of money as so bulky. My other top camping trip if you have young children with you is pop to pound shop or B&m type place before you go and buy each child a small gift that will occupy them for an hour each day. Wrap them in wrapping paper and when they are looking fed up and you want five minutes peace it’s lucky dip time. Saved my sanity camping on many a trip! And will save you ££ when out and about as you don’t have to buy the overpriced seaside crap. Have a great trip!

Thank you @Hopeandmoss & others.
Kids are no longer teeny so can’t get away with little wrapped up surprises.
Have got the usual pain-au-chocolate/cereal bars as a breakfast option too. 👍🏻

I give the grill a bit of a cursory scrape.

Once you have finished cooking, put the lid back on and the leftover charcoal will burn away to not a lot. I tend to empty that every other use.

But I wouldn’t BBQ breakfast bacon , waiting for the coals to go white, the expense of charcoal, I would just use a small stove.

We have started using packs of smoked salmon offcuts with scrambled egg for a hit camping breakfast. Easier than individual eggs and frying bacon.

We have a petrol twin burner stove we use outside as it works no matter how bad the weather, we cook breakfast on it in a big cast iron pan. Barbecue used for evening meals, sometimes we just clean the mesh thing and tip the charcoal ash away in the morning. We did try disposables but 90% of the time they where rubbish

StamppotAndGravy · 23/07/2024 21:37

We have the gas Cadac city chef that works well as a pizza oven and stove as well as a bbq. Ours heats up fast enough for breakfast bacon & eggs. It all goes in the dishwasher after a soak when we get home. It is a bit bulky compared to a camping gas stove though
