Best campsites in France

Just looking for tips on where to look for campsites (mobile home not a pitch) in France or possibly Italy for this summer - I know I have left it really late but didn't know the English 'summer' was going to be quite as cold as it is...

We will be flying not driving and i am open to anywhere in France, Northern / lake area of Italy..

Can anyone advise on good sites to look at for decent sites? We have kids who will want to swim and be near either a lake or pool. Kids are 12 and 9 so would like some 'fun stuff' eg go ape type stuff on site if possible. Pretty flexible on dates so hoping I can find something!

We have been to the Bordeaux area before and loved it and also been to Ile De Re so maybe not those two places but anywhere else.

Les Sablons?

I would start by looking at Eurocamp or Canvas holidays and narrow it down on there.

I'm sure there's an option to filter the 'no car needed sites...

Looking at flights we can only get to:

Milan
Bordeaux
Nice

So that narrows it down somewhat!

Will you have a car hired there, or have to stay near the airport?

Assuming the former:

I absolutely love Lake Annecy, which is about midway between Milan and Nice, about 4-5 hours' drive from each.

There are also the stunningly beautiful Calanques (bays/inlets) between Marseille and Cassis, about 2 hours' drive from Nice.

And the Gorges du Verdon. Lots of water sports and beautiful scenery. Near the lavender fields, if you go at the right time. Also about 2 hours from Nice.

Lots of campsites near all of them. We prefer quieter family-run campsites, but there are many Eurocamp style ones with entertainment.

I'm sure there'll be plenty near the airport cities too, I just don't know those areas as well.

Yelloh at Ilbarritz. Walking distance to a Supermarket, the beach, biarritz and bidart. 5km or so from Biarritz Airport.

Great buses to everywhere too including Bayonne and St Jean de Luz so you wouldn't need to hire a car.

Just saw your update. Train from Bordeaux to Biarritz.

Or Lacanau Ocean? Also a Yelloh campsite on the beach there. Not as good as Ilbarritz but that could just be personal preference.

We did Eurocamps (chalets) and the kids loved them

Ciela Camping au lac de biscarosse is lovely, just south of bordeaux and Camping La Rive are both great. Next to lakes with lots of facilities on the campsites.

I've just done a Eurocamp - Le Palace - not far from Bordeaux and it was brill.

I look at Eurocamp for inspiration then usually book direct because it’s cheaper. We always drive so some years take a tent but on a site with Eurocamp presence as there are more likely to be English speaking kids for the DC to make friends with. Very end of August is quieter and cheaper as lots of European families heading home for start of term.
