Camp beds?

I'm thinking of maybe getting one. Are they warmer than a SIM because they're higher? Anybody regret getting one? Any buying advice?

I hear you need a mattress on top too. What kind of thickness do people suggest?

Thanks.

Have just camped for the first time with camp beds. Definitely better than SIMs. Didn't need additional mattress or topper, just folded a fleecy blanket on top of the bed. I struggled with my SIM and sleeping bag as slid about too much!
So much nicer being elevated when getting in and out of the sleeping bag, rather than getting up off the floor, and it's so much warmer.
Plus addition storage space underneath.

I popped into Go to try one out. There did seem to be a nice amount of give in the canvas. I put a mattress on top but that brought the height up to a point when the bars on the sides wouldn't stop you rolling off.
I think I'll go for one.

Please report back how you get on and any info re brand etc. I'm taking the camping plunge this year and my one concern is getting a good nights rest so a comfortable bed is essential!

It’s very individual. I really like SIMs and can’t stand blow up beds or camp beds.

SIMs are insulated, which blow ups and camp beds are not.

Decathalon inflatable beds with a sim on top. Game changer….. so comfortable.

What’s a sim?

What’s a sim?

Also wondering

I love camping but I have a double height air mattress, duvet and real sheets. I"d rather go without half our cooking stuff than that!

If I'm camping for more than a few days I use a decathlon camp bed with a sim on top, the sim I use has an inflatable channel on each side which I like, keeps me centred on the bed. Using the bed means I have lots of storage space under it too. If I'm only staying a night or two I don't bother with the camp bed because I usually only use a smaller tent then. Without a sim the bed can be chilly in cold weather but I'm well equipped with sims and 4 season bags because we camp year round. For comfort the bed is great, easy to get into and off it but beware some of the beds are heavy and bulky.

I struggled with my SIM and sleeping bag as slid about too much!
That depends on the SIM IMO - we have a 10cm Berghaus double SIM which is flocked. We usually camp with a teddybear fleece fitted sheet over it and use our duvet instead of a sleeping bag (it's much warmer), but I have camped on it with a sleeping bag too and didn't slide about at all. DCs, on the other hand, have cheap thin SIMs with a silky/shiny surface and have the same issue as you as a result without the fitted sheet. They haven't complained however, so I won't upgrade them yet until they do.

I discounted camp beds as I find them too narrow for my sleeping habits. SIMs can be too, but if I stick a leg off the side of a SIM, it will rest on the fleece picnic blanket tent carpet. With a camp bed, it will dangle painfully. The extra storage space gained underneath would be great though...

Decathalon inflatable beds with a sim on top. Game changer….. so comfortable.

Just spent 3 very comfortable nights at a festival on a decathlon inflatable base with 10cm dreamcatcher sim on top.

Well, it came today. It's the REDCAMP Ultralight Camping Cot for Adults with Leg Extenders, Backpacking Compact Camp Bed Cot Portable Aluminum for Tent Hiking Outdoor Travel Easy Set Up, Strong Support 180KG,Black. From Amazon.

I'm 6'2" and 18 stone. It feels pretty secure and it's wider than any I tried in the shops. The side bars need a bit of tugging in place but it wasn't too hard. The bracing underneath also needed a bit of force to lock. My current tent (Robens Fairbanks) is a bit low round the edges but you can use the bed without the legs on. My next tent will be fine (Robens Klondike S) when I get it.

I'll be camping next weekend so will report back afterwards.

Wishing you many nights good sleeping on your new camp bed!

newbeginnings22 · 08/07/2024 16:12

@Mysterian how was the camped? Did you have the mattress on top too?

Mysterian · 08/07/2024 17:05

Forgot about this thread.

Slept with a blanket under me on the first night. Nothing the second night. Both times felt the same. A little more comfy than my Dreamcatcher 10cm. It was very low as my tent is too low to use the legs. It creaked a bit when I got on it but that soon went when the bed settled.

It even takes up less space when packed.

Would definitely recommend.
