How do you manage? How old are your kids?

hercules, I think from around 4 is good in their own sleeping bags but if you got some big ones and zipped them together then I reckon younger would be fine cos then they could use your body heat. Got no scientific basis for that age though!

Well, ds was born in February, so his first camp was in April. Actually, I think it's easier when they are very little because you can just tuck them inside your jacket if it gets cold. We've camped all year round (more or less) all their lives. If it is very cold we line up the beds and all get in together.

Kitter - I wouldn't go without the thermos. Hoping that dd is now old enough at 12 to take her turn to make the early morning drinks!

hercules1 · 06/04/2008 18:00

Just suggested to dh. We also have 3 huge dogs. He seems quite keen on the idea. Might give it a day or so for the snow to stop though. Talk to me some more seeker!

NaughtyNigel · 06/04/2008 18:19

But i need all those layers and a hat in August. I'm thinking my fantasy canvas tent might need a famtasy leetle iron stove in it to keep me warm. will add it to my fantasy shopping list and blow my fantasy budget.

Fullmoonfiend · 06/04/2008 18:57

mmm yes, I too have those fantasies about those tipi tents with little woodburners...
(we have a tiny campervan with an immense awning but I still get tent envy)

seeker · 06/04/2008 19:00

I've got a tipi with a firepot! Didn't I mention that?

Can I ask about your camper van? Tell me all

seeker · 06/04/2008 19:11

Sorry!

seeker · 06/04/2008 19:11

We've got a Bongo too. But we are very very old - does that make it better?

Fullmoonfiend · 06/04/2008 19:13

don't get too jealous. It is not hip or classy...but it was all we could afford (we got her off ebay for £1100)

it is an ancient ford tranny with a hightop. It has cooker and sink and little cupboards and a not quite double bed which the boys sleep on, with loads of space underneath for all the kit. We attatch a sooper-dooper big awning like
this
which is fine except for we have found ourselves very unpopular at some festivals because t takes up so much space on a campervan field

We are trying to find a way of putting a berth for the boys in the hightop bit bi=ut we are totally crap at diy and totally skint...

But we love our van so much. She is very reliable and brillinat for days out by rivers etc and barbies.

Fullmoonfiend · 06/04/2008 19:15

seeker!
I was just going to say if we didn't have a campervan, we'd have a tipi. And now you go and tell me you have a bongo too?

NaughtyNigel · 06/04/2008 19:42

Seeker! i am sooooooooooo can i come camping with you? pleeeeeese?

seeker · 06/04/2008 21:28

It's an unconverted Bongo. It's our only car as well as our one enight only sleeping place - does that make it any better?

Of course you can come with us -we once slept 12 in our tenttipi. It was very - friendly - and the snoring was unbelieveable.....

dustystar · 07/04/2008 12:14

We wear thermals under our pjs and hats (and if necessary gloves) in bed. We use mats under the airbeds and a duvet over then sleeping bags and more duvets on top. Getting into your pjs before it gets too cold is a good idea too.

silverbirch · 07/04/2008 21:56

Ditto thermals and hats - and socks. We camped in January this year with an 8 year old and were in the snow over Easter and this last weekend. It was great. We use karrimats + self inflating mats underneath and take extra heavy blankets for over the sleeping bags. Key is to keep warm at night. And have a kind hubby who wakes you with a cup of freshly brewed tea! Small tents help too - small volumes are easier to keep warm.
