Easiest tent to put up & take down

I m looking for a new budget family tent to replace our very old tunnel one. It got to be big enough for 4 people and a small dog. We used to have a 6 people tunnel tent with good sized bedrooms and living area however it took two people and a quite bit of time to put up. I m atm considering a teepee tent.
Would anyone like to share their experience about tents and possibly recommend one please?

My advice is to have a big glass of wine before you start putting the tent up... then it doesn't seem to matter how long it takes to put it up or how problematic it is.

It's the weather is fine I don't peg out half the guy ropes - there's normally far too many.

Personally I find the geodesic shapes using extendible bendy poles to be pretty quick to put up. Depends how much head room you really want.

I've had a few tents - there was only a huge Khyam tent with 3 zip on side pods, a porch and an external joined mechanical frame that was a nightmare to get up and down - but it was big enough for about 6 adults and 6 kids to cook and play in - honestly don't buy anything bigger than you really need. As I said half jokingly at the start - your attitude to that horrible task (after a long drive) to putting the tent up makes a difference - we tended to break out some nice food and drink on arrival and try not to think of it as a pain in the ass task.

Hopefully someone more helpful will be along soon too help.

Bell tents are very easy to put up, but quite heavy and bulky.

Ditto air beam (inflatable) tents.

Teepee tents are the simplest to put up but are generally a single room. I have an Asda teepee, cheap and cheerful but I wouldn't trust it in a heavy downpour! They do a bell tent too.
Air beams are quick to put up but can be fairly heavy as they have a lot of extra material.

We have an inflatable tent. It really doesn't seem to take that much less time than our old pole tent. It takes up more than twice as much room in the car though Angry

A think that popup tents are easiest to set up, but hard to fold again.

I think dome tents are pretty easy to set up and take down again. They also come in various sizes and they are pretty light and small to pack.

If you are considering a one room tent then i would recommend a coleman octagon 8, we have had one for three years and seriously can pitch it in about 15 mins!

NotMeNoNo · 26/05/2024 20:26

The thing is it depends on how you camp and how much comfort/space you need. An hour pitching a big stable tent is worth it if it's raining or you want to avoid tripping over each other. With children it's easier IME for them to have an obvious bedroom to contain their stuff and toys, and room enough for adults to stand up. A porch is useful for a dog or to give a dry space of grass to keep things.

I'm not sure I'd use a tipi tent with a family but there again I like organised camping.

Why not look at a slightly newer and better designed tunnel tent, maybe an air tent if you really can't face handling the poles.

soupfiend · 26/05/2024 20:31

Bell tent, but they are not budget friendly and they are very heavy, but literally just one pole and then a bit of pegging out

Diversion · 26/05/2024 20:32

Bell tent or Touraeg, much sturdier than our old tunnel tent and much more space. It is possible to put them up on your own and takes us about 30 minutes (and then about 2 hours to set it up inside along with the porch and the toilet tent). As someone else has said, they are heavy and quite bulky.

ThursdaysMonkey · 26/05/2024 20:34

We have this (it's described as a yurt but I think it's a very lightweight bell tent) and it's fab.

I've put it up myselfbon my own with the kids and it takes about 10 minutes. I bought some waterproof spray for it because the reviews I read said it's a bit leaky, and I glued a bit more velcro on the windows but other than that it's done us proud and not leaked at all. One of the biggest bonuses for me is as soon as you get the main pole up (almost the first job) you can get the kids inside while you do the other couple of poles.

For the money I don't think you can get much better.

I’ve had both a large tunnel tent and a large canvas bell tent. Hated the bell tent. Took up loads of space and i nearly left the bloody thing on a campsite when packing up in the pouring rain, was so heavy when drenched. Didn’t like the open plan aspect either. Always found the tunnel tent quick and easy to put up, was a 5 man Outwell and I had it done and dusted in under 20 mins by myself

OverZealous · 26/05/2024 20:39

Air tent. My kids (4 + 6) put ours up in the garden last week in half an hour (6 man tent).

DH and I can get it up and usable in about 10 mins, then I’m in sorting kitchen and bedrooms while he does the guy lines.

Putting down is easy too once you send the kids over it to roll the air all out. Packs down to a big lump but definitely manageable, and worth the weight in the time saved.

SummerSupFish · 26/05/2024 20:47

Outwell tents we’ve always found very well made if there’s 4 of you get a 6-man tent or depending how old the kids are get two smaller tents and they put their own up.

StarDolphins · 26/05/2024 20:48

I have a Coleman tent & I could put it up on my own! It’s very easy & all colour coded.

ruralwanderer · 26/05/2024 20:53

I've got an Aldi Air tent and it's so easy that I can put it up and take it down by myself. It also only weighs about 20kg so is a one person lift in and out of the car. Ours has withstood some pretty harsh weather and I'm happy to recommend it 👍

Muchtoomuchtodo · 26/05/2024 21:07

We’ve got a Berghaus 4 man air beam tunnel tent for 4.

it’s tight for 4, we can get our bags in the bedroom so they have to go in the living area at night and then bag in the bedroom in the day but it’s far more manageable and quick / easy to put up than our old outwell tunnel tent for 6 that had steel poles. The outwell did survive some awful weather though, I’m sure our current one wouldn’t have coped in the same way.

AppleGarden · 31/05/2024 23:24

Thanks for all the ideas. I think I will get one from Asda.
Wish you all have a nice summer.👍☀️
