Thin Sim + camp bed or thick SIM

Cailinrua1979 · 23/04/2024 20:32

Hello,
We're a family of 5 heading to the Vendee and Normandy for the month of July. We'll be tent camping between 2 sites and I'm trying to maximise our chances of a good night's sleep.
6yo and 3yo (nearly 4yo) will sleep in bedside me, my 8yo (nearly 9yo) will sleep in beside my husband/his dad.
We have a vango shangri-la double Sim from last year, it's 15cm and very comfortable.

I'd be very appreciative of any and all advice about what I should buy to kit ourselves out in terms of mattresses etc.
Should I get a thin double SIM, and put it on a camp bed, or would you buy another thick Sim and just put it on the floor? Another option I haven't thought of?

I hate feeling damp and cold in the night, so will do almost anything to avoid it.
Thanks!

Double camp beds are a nightmare IMO, as you can feel the centre bar.

I would just put a thicker SIM on the floor.

Quechua bed bases are really good with a SIM

gindreams · 24/04/2024 17:26

@Cailinrua1979 would you recommend the vango sim I have had my eye on it for a while

Ditsy79 · 24/04/2024 17:40

We have an Outwell posadas with a 5cm Sleep-in sim. It's so comfortable. Our 10 year old has slept on a single campbed with a sim since she was 4 or 5, and sleeps really well.

Oh i would, for sure. It's very comfortable and stable. We don't feel each other move in the night. But for me, most important is that the damp and cold doesn't come through from the ground.

Thanks for this. Checking you're referring to the inflatable bed bases that you can clip together?

Get a picnic blanket with silver waterproof on one side and put it under the SIM - works a treat, and doesn't take up too much space

Seas164 · 24/04/2024 19:28

We've got this and I would not now camp without it, I literally look forward to bedtime instead of dreading it from about 3pm and postponing it as long as possible! Although, it is a behemoth and we now have a van to fit everything in, the older I get the less light I travel.

@Cailinrua1979 yes you are quite far off the ground and they are very comfortable, plus they fold down very small as well so easy to store
I'm planning to upgrade to the 15cm sim and I feel that will be very luxurious

Fabulous! I'm the same.... No traveling light anymore. This looks like a similar spec to the vango we have. Do you use it on the ground? Or with some kind of base?

I don't think you'll regret it 😊

Whatever you are on, put a barrier between the ground and it, to stop the cold seeping up. Roll mat, blanket etc. keeps the damp cold away!

Seas164 · 24/04/2024 19:54

I put down a couple of layers of rug underneath it, but it can go straight on the floor. It is excellent, but it is a bastard to pack away and it's never gone back in the storage bag it came in yet!

I have this Posadas one and we do feel the centre bar, so much so that my husband now refuses to use it anymore. (The other poster may be referring to a Posadas that comes with its own SIM).
We have bought the Decathlon Ultim double SIM - haven't tried it camping yet but it has a high r rating which is an insulation rating and it feels very comfortable.
Based on your name and the Charles camping link I'm presuming you're in Ireland, I don't think the Posadas with the specially fitted SIM is available here, just the standard one that is linked in your post. The Decathlon double mattress I mentioned is €140 at the moment - I paid €180 a couple of months ago and at that thought it was good value.

I've tried blankets and mats but I could still feel the cold. But haven't tried the silver backed blankets so will definitely give that a go! Thanks

Yes, in Ireland. Thanks a million for that. I'll certainly look into the decathlon ultim double.

Yes, that is the one. The bar doesn't bother us as we sleep in separate sleeping bags on either side of it. We both sleep really well on the campbed with the SIM on top - the Sleepin SIM has an indent down the middle that fits over the bar on the campbed.

This sounds like a great suction if I could get it in Ireland. Thanks a lot for the information.
